A little unhappy with baseball since we have an experienced team with somewhat high expectations but we are 0-5 vs the Colonial conference and losses to teams like Columbia, Rider, and today with Norfolk State have me a little worried. I know that we have a first year coach but this is inexcusable to lose to teams like this and we returned most of our good players from last year. But everyone has been saying wait til he gets his players in there but according to the past 3 years we have had quality programs.

Football is a little overhyped since we have not had a real quality win since beating App State about 10 years ago but good things are happening there in a number of areas. A win this year against Youngstown or Elon would convince me of that but until we knock off a good team I will always be a little hessitant to say that we have arrived on the national scene in 1AA. Being in the Big South conference would tend to knock us down a few notches in itself. Football takes more time to develop that other sports do and I think that we are on the right track.

the baseball team has had some injuries also that have forced them to change the lineup around. this doesn't excuse many of the mistakes made, but I think it does account for a little bit of the problems. I will be glad though when the new recruits come in, although I really hope we can turn this season around and do well in the conference

I guess so. If you were AD, is there any coaching changes you would make right now? (and for semi-reality sake, assume you can't hire back anybody from the past) Every team that we have that isn't up to our very high standards seems to have a new coach and would be ridiculous to be judging them already.

I think that Quiz Bowl needs a new coach. ;-) Study :brownbag :dontgetit :blahblah :oldhag

Yes, I know that CJ is the coach, and yes, I know the team does really well, and yes, I am kidding. That's why I did the emoticons, just like CJ usually does. /end disclaimer

Seriously, how about women' soccer. We have had some descent year's from time to time and the big win vs Arkansas a couple of years ago but for the most part a very mediocre bunch and if not for the Big South being so weak we are not really that good. Against the Colonial the only win I remember is vs VCU but that was year'a ago and they were not that good. The BSC is a far cry from the Colonial in womens soccer as I see it.

The rest of the sport's failures appear to be short term or first year coaches like mens hoops, baseball, softball (This year we are bad but the last 3 have been great and we have had good years in the distant future). No reason to fire any coach for one bad year following some greatness or first year coaches.

If all of our sports were as good as womens hoops, cross country, or track we would have nothing to complain about and just be happy all the time. Unless you want to keep expecting more.

Big South titles in 2000, 2001, and 2005. Another championship game appearance in 2006 that was lost on PK's. NCAA Tourney win in 2001 (Tennessee Tech, play-in game).

Three conference championships buys you a little grace if a down year (last year) happens once in ahwile.

I was basing my opinion on overall performance and not these Big South titles that you speak of. The point I am making is with the Big South being so weak that winning the conference would be a given anyway. I would like to see us beat the James Madison's, Old Dominion's, and the William and Mary's as opposed to whipping up on inferior Big South Competition. Then again not all sports programs in the university are going to be up to high standards so I am not saying that we should dump the coach but changes need to made.

You have a CAA hard-on. Just admit it. Nothing we do will compare to the mighty CAA.

Kids in all sports look at conference affiliation when choosing a school. It's not the only factor that's analyzed, but its important to them. That means though Liberty wins three championships in the last seven years, the team is still heavy in Big South-level talent, making it more dofficult to win against the CAA and other such conferences.

Now, I will agree that due to Liberty's potential for a national recruiting base being MUCH stronger than any other in the conference, it should be the best in every sport. But that only goes as far as OUR conference.

JMU's RPI at the end of last season was 18th. William & Mary's, 27th. I'm all for high expectations, but I am just as in favor of reasonable ones.

And honestly, if I was coming up, I'd rather player for the best team in the Big South than the 3rd or 4th in the CAA because I'd know if I won my tournament, which is more likely being the best in the BSC as opposed to the 3rd or 4th in the CAA, that I'd go to the NCAAs.

In women's soccer, the CAA sent three teams this past year (W&M, ODU and I think either Hofstra or JMU)...and overall the CAA is, arguably, the best mid-major conference in America. However, our record against CAA teams should not matter as much as how we do in the Big South. Winning the Big South-which is where we are-earns us invites to the Big Dances, having a winning record against the CAA does not.

Generally, I am happy with the direction our teams are going. Women's soccer, softball, and baseball are down right now from where they were last year, but every team is going to have down years. Football is dramatically improving and just won its first conference championship, ditto for men's soccer, volleyball and women's basketball have returned to the top and are favorites to win next year, men's basketball was better this year and will continue to improve under Coach McKay, track and field are getting national rankings, women's tennis has posted the greatest turnaround of any sport this year and will be even better next year, men's tennis has been hampered by injuries, has no where to go but up and next year will go up. Wrestling is doing well as is golf. Fan The Flames Yay!!!

As long as you guys are happy that is okay. I just never felt that the Big South is where we need to be at this point in our development. I have never thought too highly of this conference.
QB Competition

We have some strong points (not many) but overall […]
