My guess is that LU will be the overwhelming favorite heading into next year.
I agree. After all, LU will have the young Curry (the new "Great Hope" of Liberty). I'm sure he'll be able to follow the previous "Great Hope", that ACC point guard Bannister... hold on... Bannister didn't lead LU to a championship? Huh... Well, there was the "Great Hope" before him, that Big East guard Brewington... wait...
he didn't lead LU to a championship either? Hmmm... Well, you'll always have 2004 I guess.
Does Winthrop have a ton coming back? No. Does anyone in the Big South? No. Will this be the last championship year for Winthrop? Perhaps, but please forgive me and other Winthrop fans if we don't think that. You see, 2004 was also suppose to mark the end of the "Winthrop Era" in the Big South. What happened after that? A junior with a bunch of sophomores and freshmen went on to win the Big South. Last summer I kept hearing that Winthrop's days at the top were over because Marshall and the Big 3 were all gone. But what happened? Winthrop won again. Now it's, well... Marshall's players are going to graduate.
Now Winthrop's days at the top are over! So, what will be the rallying cry this time next year if Winthrop again wins the Big South?
Really, I think it's great for Liberty fans to think they'll win next year. I thought it was great that High Point fans thought they could win this year. But don't act like Winthrop fans are crazy for thinking we have as good a shot as anyone to win next year.
