I wound up getting a Motorola Q Black, not the fancy version. After all the discounts, it was actually free (although I have to wait a few weeks for the rebate, and I did spend some money on a 2nd battery and a data card). Still, getting a $300 cell phone for under $80 is great in my book.

I'm thinking about getting a smartphone in the next few months. I'm on Alltel, and was wondering if anyone knows what the prices would be for one of these. Hmo, you said something about a blackberry charge on your bill, is it less if you just get a phone that isn't a blackberry? I want a phone that gets internet, I don't know a whole lot about all the different technology though.

I just got the HTC Touch from Alltel and love it. I don't text all that much and there are some downloadable keyboards that make it a little easier for email.

i had a treo from att that i LOVED... until it started randomly freezing and restarting and my power button wouldnt turn it off. no lie... had it less than 3 weeks. anywhoos, i replaced it and had the same issues over again, so i got rid of that and got a cingular 8525... like it. i really liked the touchscreen stuff. esp with the treo and my 8525 has it also.

although i think the main issue with my treo was the palm OS on it. i hear the windows OS on the treo makes it work MUCH better.

that being said, i really like the way the treo laid my text messages out like an im thread so i could see who said what, when and it didnt clutter up my text message box. so, i might have to go back to that.

To get a phone like that from Alltel, they require you to bump up your plan to include internet and all of that, and that starts at either $60/month or $80/month.

I came very close to getting a smart phone during my last plan-switch, but I just couldn't bear the thought of having one of those things in my pocket. I can hardly stand putting my krzr in my pocket, and it's tiny.

i'm not sure of the details on my current plan but i know it is over that amount because i'm on a group with my family. i have nationwide 900 i think. i was wondering how much extra the internet would add to my current plan. i can probably still get a better deal being on a group plan with my family i think. what is 'all of that'? besides internet

It only added about $5 to our plan...but it was a family plan with 3 phones and junior's unlimited text messages...so it was not a stretch for us.

thats very similar to ours.. we have 5 phones, each with 1000 texts. my problem is i can't find out without one of my parents being there because alltel won't give me account information. if i could do that for an extra $5 a month i'd do that for sure

Just call your parents from the Alltel store, or have your parents put you as someone who can change the account.

More than likely Alltel stores are open tomorrow, Saturday, and Monday.

JDUB, do the Alltel stores shut down in North Carolina for the basketball tournament? Sort of like Carolina's own version of the Blue Laws? :P

OK...for Alltel, this is how it is, (I think).

If you buy a smartphone, they make you carry the data package, which is somewhere around that extra $60 a month that SJ said...

If you buy a regular alltel phone and want to connect to the internet, you can just pay $5 a month extra for Axcess Web.

If you want to be really cheap...you can buy a Uprepaid Alltel phone - get the motorola one...and sign up for the pay per day, chose unlimited text messaging and 1000 night and weekend minutes...and you text just about all you want...and get on the internet for 10 cents a minute during the day, or if you wait until 9PM or on weekends, it's free.

Another cheap option to get around paying for the internet charge, if your place has wifi, but it won't work with Alltel. You can do what I did for a while - buy a unlocked Ipac...then buy an AT&T or cingulargo phone card for it. That way you pay about $10 a month for the phone service...and all of the other features with your internet work through wifi.

Now the $60 that you pay is a faster connection through alltel - it's called EDGE, which is supposed to be around DSL speed. I used the $5 a month Axcess Web, and tethered to my computer doing some speed checks, connected around 108KPS. about twice as fast as dial-up, but only half as fast as DSL.

Hope this helps.

You can from Verizon. I don't even know where Alltel exists.

Yes, you can specify only one. I am not sure that if it is not the "main" line if all the others get the unlimited texting, etc that comes with it. I recommend talking to MIKE at the Alltel place at the Graves Mill shopping center.
