Ok, I was hoping not to have to post about all this publicly, but since there is a lot going around, here is the deal:
About two and a half years ago I was in karate class doing some movement drills. I lost my balance while trying to change direction and my weight ended up on my right knee and I felt something "pop". I went to Light Medical the next day and Dr Lane said its probably a torn meniscus and to be careful. He said if it wasnt better in two weeks to come back and see him. So about two and a half weeks later (I had a setback while I was with the band in Allentown), I had to hustle to karate class because I overslept. I came to a grassy hill that was still kinda wet from the night before and tried to walk down it. I took my first step and my left foot slipped out. While that was happening, my right foot stuck in a muddy area and so all my weight went backwards and I bent my knee so far, that I literally sat on my right ankle. I got up and I knew something bad had happened. Unfortunately the soonest I could see the doctor was the following Monday. After a few appointments over the course of the week, I was scheduled for knee surgery that Friday morning to repair my meniscus (which they figured I had retorn in the second fall). They discovered while they were working on my meniscus that I had partially torn my ACL. They couldnt go in and fix it then so they closed it up and told my doctor (Dr. Hopkins, who I was referred to by Dr. Lane). At that time Dr. Hopkins told me I was eventually going to need surgery but that I could manage even with the partial tear.
I use the crutches from time to time when the pain in my knee gets to be unbearable and I need some support while I walk. To help with the pain all I really have is Ibuprofen. I took a couple extra on that night that I was playing DDR so that I did not have to worry about the pain because DDR had become a favorite game of mine. Of course I woke up the next morning in even MORE pain, so that was not a very good idea. Sometimes I go on one crutch instead of two because I still want to be able to take care of some basic things myself (like getting food in the dining hall, going to basketball games, working at the radio station, etc.) It probably has not been a very good idea to walk on it but, Im also extremely stubborn, much like my dad. He hurt his knee when I was in middle school and he continued to do his rounds, even while walking around with the assistance of crutches, much like I have been doing now.
Sometimes I go without, but that is mostly because when I go around on the crutches, people ask what happened, I tell them and they feel sorry for me and so I figure I am going to be tough and get around without them.
