Every restaraunt has them now: Applebees, Chilis, Ruby Tuesday, Outback, etc.

My question is, are you supposed to tip these people that bring the food to you?

No. That goes against what a tip is for. Although I wouldnt be surprised if you were expected to.

I always tip. Usually a dollar or two. Especially up here in Michigan in the winter. If they are willing to bring the food to my car in 20 degree weather, I'm going to give them a dollar or two. Even when the weather is nice, I think it is a good thing to drop them a buck or two.

Another question, do you tip the pizza delivery guys? I've known a few people that refuse to tip them. I usually tip around 10% - 15% (round off to the nearest dollar after 10%).

In restaurants I'm almost always at least 20%.

Most of them, at least it was this way before, get assigned to that duty for a shift; greatly diminishing their normal tables & tips. Always tip them, just to be on the safe side. They are going out to your car so that you don't have to use any energy walking.

Alright, if I recall from the last tip thread, you used to be a server. But I know you can't even say that last line with a straight face.

Close...it was my Connecticut wife that was a server for 5 years.

Bottom line, if someone brings you something, they are doing a service. You don't have to tip them over-the-top for carside, but give them a frickin' bone here & there. 8)

I don't tip them, and I've never thought about tipping them before, but we got applebees carside to go this weekend. I went and picked up, put down 0.00 for tip, and the girl gave me a dirty look. That was the first time it crossed my mind as to whether or not I should tip them.

The way I look at it is it's like carryout. When you get carryout at a pizza place, do you tip them?

It is true that you don't tip at fastfood restaurants and in store pizza pickup. I've just always viewed it differently. Although it isn't much more expensive now to pick up Applebee's than to get McDonalds or other fast food. I always spend more than $5 at fastfood places now-a-days (usually comes to around $5.50).

Having said that, I still tip and will continue to do so. Not much on curbside, but I still tip.

nothing wrong with tipping a buck at curbside, and i have never been a server. i would say the people that bring out that food are probably servers so why not?

I hate looking like such a cheapskate in these threads but they didn't do anything. I drove there myself and I picked up the food that I paid for. If they drove to my house, then yes. If they dance a jig for me, sure. But them walking 10 feet AND carrying a bag at the same time? Probably not enough to call that a service.

And I haven't ever done the curbside pickup before. Maybe they'd guilt me into it.

I've done the curbside pickup about a dozen times or so and this is the first time I've ever thought about it. It was that girls evil look that did it!

I agree with that. If they didn't offer to bring it to me, I wouldn't mind walking in and picking it up. It's not my fault they said they'd bring it to me.

I need someone who actually works there to answer this...what are they paid an hour? I dont think it's the standard 3.50 or whatever waiters get but I think it's pretty low

As long as it's minimum wage or more, I'm not tipping carside.

What about the folks at Sonic. The receipt says you are supposed to tip them 15%, I say no way!

I go through the drive thru at Sonic just to avoid the situation all together. If you think about it, it's the same exact thing (ordering via intercom), only you get your food faster.

If I'm in a hurry and getting food on the go, I'll go to the drive through. If I'm with somebody and there's no rush, I'll go to one of the pull-in spots.

I usually use the drive thru, but last night I had time to kill so I pulled in. It said right on the ticket that a 15% gratuity is suggested. Greatr suggestion falling on this guy's deaf ears.
