Sparky Woods Named New VMI Head Football Coach
Formerly served as head coach at South Carolina and Appalachian State



LEXINGTON, Va. – Virginia Military Institute athletic director Donny White announced Tuesday that Sparky Woods will become the Keydets’ new head football coach.

Woods, a veteran coach in the college ranks with over 30 years of experience, replaces Jim Reid who resigned the position in January to become outside linebackers coach for the Miami Dolphins.

Woods becomes the 30th head football coach in the Institute’s 117-year history. He brings ten years of head coaching experience at both the SEC and FCS (I-AA) level.

Nobody likes being fired, but Sparky Woods found some good when he and the rest of Mike Shula's coaching staff were sent packing by Alabama last year.

"It probably ought to be a rule that every 30 years you get to take a year off," he said.

Woods' sabbatical is over.

He was hired a month ago at UL-Lafayette as the OC. Yea, I'd say he jumps around.

OK, we know Smoothie likes the guy b/c of the UVa ties. However, I Googled this guy and his name comes up about a half-dozen times in the last year for coordinator and position jobs -- including the UL-Lafayette thing -- that he, ultimately, didn't get. What does it say that VMI hired a guy to be their head coach who couldn't land any kind of coaching job in over a year?
