Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the fuss they raised over dropping rifle at WVU was b/c that team actually had won a few national championships in the 90's/early 00's.

Yes, they did. WVU and Alaska-Fairbanks had shared or won every national title for many years in a row, I believe.
