As of 3 PM on Friday 4/28, www.libertyflames.com will change over to a new format. The site name will remain the same, so you shouldn't have to change any bookmarks but the look and content will change. Management of the site will be taken over by on-campus personnel as opposed to the current use of an outside vendor. The site may be down for several hours on Friday during the change-over but it shouldn't take very long and, hopefully, the content of the site will reflect more accurate, PAMedic-al standards. If you guys happen to spot broken links or incorrect information on the new site, email Kris Sennett at ksennett@liberty.edu . However, please do not overwhelm her with format and graphics questions.

Of course we all know the saying..."if you want something done right, do it yourself". I remember writing to WRVL and telling them that their link off of the site was wrong and they wrote back saying they have been trying for quite a while to get it fixed from the vendor who does the site. :(

The Champion site was quite an improvement so this one ought to be too.

I got a question! Why would you send broken links, etc, to the Admin Asst in the athletic department?
Shouldn't the information go to the Don't Call Us Sports Information We are now the Department of Athletic Media Relations folks?

I would have thought that too, but Kris was who I was told to contact in case of.

I remember when we paid a good amount to have the current site done and found out from a website guru that he could have done the same product in about 2 days where it took almost 6 months to get this current format. I really am anticipating this site cause what we have now is way below even an average site. But hey until someone can actually tell Bigsouthsports.com that there site is awful except me the conference as a whole gets a third grade look.

on a side note, noticed today Liberty.edu is undergoing changes as well- though some of the pages weren't loading correctly when I attempted to access the hockey home page.

Most departments are responsible for editing the content of their pages, so if you see changes happening, or something doesn't look quite right, it's probably because someone hit the publish button a little too quickly. The site itself hasn't changed all that much for a couple of years now. Lots of technical and content changes, but the site is still the same. :)

Two hours to go. Anyone else on pins and needles? It will be nice to actually get timely updates or not have the site go down almost every Sunday. I suspect the SID's will do a great job with it.

April 28, 2006 · Lynchburg, Va.

The Liberty University Athletics Department will officially launch its newest version of the LibertyFlames.com web site on Wednesday, May 3, at approximately 3 p.m. (EST) as announced today.

LibertyFlames.com has been the official web site for the Athletics Department since February 16, 2004, serving as the best avenue for Liberty fans to get the latest information on Liberty’s 18 NCAA Division I athletics programs.

I can't wait to see the new and improved version of the website. Hopefully that will mean more timely coverage of all LU sports events and gametracker for all sports.

It didn't surprise me that it didn't happen today. Nothing against the fine folks in IT, but it just always seems when working with either a computer or the web, that things just don't go as planned. I was ready to throw something at my PC last night because it was messing up, but I finally found the culprit program and deleted it.

Gametracker for LU instead of using someone elses link on our site. Definitely one of the things that is needed.

First, the new site is not going to have game tracker. Game tracker costs money and the new site when it is unveiled is not going to have it. Game tracker and video web casts are planned, but that is in the future. Liberty is so far behind in other areas in the athletic department and this is not a priority right now.

Second, I keep hearing about timely coverage of Liberty sports on this board. Do you know it is being discussed to not post game stories the same night on the site, but the next day? Ask givemethemic, UVA does not post most of their stories the same day, they post the next day. Kevin Keys who is over marketing and media relations worked 20 years at West Virginia and they do not post game stories on the web until the next day. If you are looking to get out scores and game stories, the new rule of thumb in media relations is to post the next day. TV, radio and newspapers are used for immediate release. Many schools in the Big South, Colonial and A-10, do not even update and report scores for their olympic sports (tennis, golf, softball, track, volleyball, etc.) on a weekly basis. The web site is not ESPN or CNN or for that matter North Carolina where they have a whole team of people who just write and post stories to the web. It falls on media relations who currently have two people.

Right now, the Liberty athletic media relations is considered the top one in the Big South (Ask Chris Lang) and is better than most offices its size (three persons), while having more sports to take care of (comparable schools - VCU, Old Dominon, George Mason, Appalachian State, Towson, Dayton, etc.). Most events are posted before 11 p.m. on the same night. Most of the time it does not happen because they do not have the facilities at the site they are visiting or had to leave with a team immediately and are on a bus and cannot get wireless internet to post.

Problems or glitches are going to Kris because she was appointed by Jeff Barber to handle this. Both members of the media relations department are out of the office at various times during the week, so instead of no one getting the glitches or them waiting for several days, someone is able to compile them. To even suggest someone is passing the buck, just shows how misinformed you are. Do you realize that both guys in there right now are working over 55 hours including weekends and neither gets paid over $27,000? It is interesting that people write comments about things they know nothing about.

Finally, it nice to see you make fun of the name change from sports information to media relations, but that was not the idea of anyone in the department. That was a Thom Park change and it remains. It is what most athletic department's are calling their public relations wings. Indiana, the first to do it, has had the name for over 30 years.

Easy now, close to the situation. There's no reason to get the blood pumping. The fact that folks on here are asking for Gametracker shouldn't be taken as a personal attack. It just shows there is an interest.

Our staff does a fine job with their resources and no one on here is disparaging anyone's character or skill set. Working as an SID is a thankless & tiring job. Even at the big schools there isn't great financial reward for all of the headaches. We have several current & former SIDs regularly on this board and they have our respect for their efforts.

As for the name change, I admit I do find it rather humorous no matter whose decision it was. I give the guys at Texas, Texas A&M, Houston & Rice grief over it as well. Come on, lighten up. Life is too short to take lame comments on a message board so personally.

Sly, I have to disagree with you on this one... too many people on this board attack first and get informed later... I'm glad to see someone defend that department. In the perfect world, there would be someone on staff just doing the website... but they don't have that luxury and right now two guys are doing the work of three (or more like 5 in actuality.)

i have zero problem with the defense of the dept. but as a UVA fan game stories are posted the same day 90% of the time. i look at that website after every game.....other schools do that too...even in the big south. but it sounds like you are a well informed person, and i appreciate you coming on and saying what you did. i think the site has improved and im sure it will be even better with the new version.....but relax, we all just want the best of LU athletics.
