I am happy for the program that McKay is on board. I think he will bring LU back to competing for league titles and NCAA appearances. I have observed him in practice and he does an excellent job. I was impressed. From a PR standpoint, he is polished and very intelligent.

Realistically, as much as people will bash me for this next comment, I honesty do not see him here longer than 4 years...this is a springboard for him to get back into a major program. He has tasted it, dealt with the adversity at NM...I feel McKay has something to prove for the people who feel he cannot coach at a high level D 1 university.

I could be dead wrong, but I am going to cherish the experience he is bringing to the program and he will someday leave the program in excellent shape for years to come.

I don't agree with you. McKay has stated numerous times that Liberty is a place he can call home, that he loves being here, that this is the place God wants him to be, etc. If he has something to prove to others, why not turn LU into a high level DI program?

That's comparing apples and oranges. Pete Gillen had the intent to stay at UVa, but he didn't do enough with the program to warrant a longer stay. We're talking about if McKay wants to stay here.

And I don't see why McKay can't do that at LU. Jerry always said he wanted LU to be for Christian kids what BYU & ND are for Mormon and Catholic kids. I think that this can happen athletically in basketball with McKay.

There is no doubt that he can coach at the highest level. Just because someone struggles for a time as a coach doesn't mean a thing. Even Dean Smith, Bobby Knight, and Lute Olsen struggled here and there. Some programs are patient through a coach's struggles and others aren't. I think Ritchie is the man to bring us to the next level in this program just as I believe the same with Rocco and Toman. He will stay until he is done with what he has set out to acomplish here. Only he and God tryly know what that is.

I realize that speculation is the foundation of sites like this, but IMHO trying to speculate on someones intentions is rather pointless. I would think less of Richie if he did not want to return to coaching at the high D1 level, but as has been stated, that can in fact be achieved right here at LU, and IMHO in a relatively short period of time. It's nothing like football in that regard. Bball requires relatively few elite players to achieve a high level of success.

For now, I would take him at his word that he loves it here and wants to build a great program. I would think that the thing which could possible throw a big monkey wrench in the works is if the students and community never get behind the team. I can't see that happening if we have success on the court, and if we don't have success on the court, he not only isn't going to get any high-major offers, but eventually the decision to stay or go will not be his.

Jon you're right. The word "now" is so imperative to this conversation. I just have a feeling, that he will be here for a long time.

I am trying to push Richie out, by no means. Can Liberty become what Winthrop has been recently, yes. Can Liberty become a BYU or ND...in their own regards, yes, but the trouble is here is the conference Liberty plays in. I am not taking much thought here, but besides Gonzaga, I cannot come up with 1 team in mid-major conference that say they have been a top 10 men's hoop team. Now, some may have a couple, but we are not talking 10. If Liberty were to ever leave the Big South and join a stronger conference, then yes, LU could have the potential to be a High Level D 1.

I want nothing more than success for Liberty and McKay. I am trying to be a little realistic not a dreamer.

If we get an Akeem and a Drexler in 2 years, then let's talk again.

Lets look at it logically. Would McKay say so if he intended to use the program as a springboard? Certainly not, no coach would. Every coach is going to say he's happy to be here...blah, blah, blah, blah. If he had said otherwise he probably wouldn't have been hired. Lets just live with the present and not try to figure out where McKay is going to be coaching two or three years from now. And yes, i think we will be really good in two or three years and he will be getting offers from Big Time programs. I think McKay feels has something to prove. Whether he feels the need to coach in the ACC or SEC etc, who knows.

Tonight Mark Edwards asked him how he has liked his for 7-8 months here. He responded saying how people have asked him how long he'd be here and all of that and he said he never remembers enjoying a job more than he is now, except for when they went to the NCAA tournament. He said he loves it at Liberty.

After thinking about this last night, I came to the realization of our situation. I'm glad Ritchie is here now. I hope he stays here for a long time. But only time will tell.
