So I'm here at the baseball winter meetings and I figured I'd share anything I hear or people I run into

Tonight I spoke with Peter Gammons and I asked him where Santana would go...he said he didnt see a way he goes anywhere other than the Yanks...which goes against the reports that surfaced within the last few days. I also asked him if he'll be voting for Big Mac to go in the Hall and he said of course he would...I found that interesting as well...

Hughes trumps Ellsbury any day of the week.

The best deal the Twins are ever going to see is the one being mentioned: Hughes, Cabrera and a mid-level pitching prospect. Unless the Sox man up and add Lester back in to the deal with Ellsbury, Johan will be pitching in pinstripes this year.

I agree...and he acts as if he's been dead for 100 years...he's old cranky and you cant disagree with him or he'll rip you a new one...stand firm and fire back! We do this about every year though about something...

I'm really hoping some good stories develop this year...

I'm pretty sure I've shared my drunken Steve Phillips story...if not I will again...it's one of my fav's I've experienced first hand...

Flameshaw, I've been wanting to check on the Angels since my buddy left them, I'll see what I can dig up today

Phil Hughes is way overrated. Sorry but his consistency is crap.

They also added Jacque Jones to play LF. Inge may end up getting traded.

Will Ohman and Omar Infante to the Braves for RHP Jose Asencio.

Andruw Jones may be on his way to Kansas City.

They were stupid to get rid of Maybin and Miller. Those kids were going to be REALLY good.

Andrew Miller made his MLB debut less than a year after leaving college.

Maybe made his MLB debut less than two years out of high school, and that's even after being injured in the minors.

IN 2-3 years they may regret it...and they will miss Inge's defense at 3B...
...but for the short term, it is a great deal for both teams.

Just remember they are prospects. They can be huge or they can turn into Lastings Milledge.

FWIW...Jayson Stark is reporting that next year the Marlins payroll as of now will be 8 million. The highest paid player will be Closer Kevin Gregg...at $575,000. Now...stat of the day...Gay Rod makes more in 4 days than Kevin Gregg makes all year. Unreal! I may want to loosen up the arm...I may be able to play in Florida next year.

As the resident Tigers fan, let me chime in (not that I know any more about baseball than anyone else, because I don't). This was a great move for the Tigers. Maybin and Miller are great prospects, and that is how the current Tigers were built, but Maybin didn't show anything when he played last year, and he's young. Unless he turns out to be Ken Griffey Jr, they don't need him. And Miller was going to have a hard time cracking an already-full rotation. I'd take Dontrell Willis over an unproven Andrew Miller any day. Detroit can't hold onto this team for too much longer, and some are getting old. Their farm system is loaded, has been for years, but they have to win now.

And I have a soft spot for Inge, because it gets the locals around here talking about my team, but he was awful last year. A great third baseman defensively, but the guy swings at everything, and tries to hit it out of the park at every at-bat. I don't know if they would have kept him even without this trade. Cabrera is definitely an upgrade at 3rd.

I just hope the Tigers focus more on their pitching this year like they did two years ago. 2006, they lead the league in pitching, average offense, go to the World Series. 2007, they lead the league in offense, pitching looks average, don't even make the playoffs. They need healthy pitching to make this happen. I really hope this is their year.
