Why does an intro song have to be about fire? That's like saying an intro for Winthrop has to be by the Eagles.

Might be nice if it was flame related, but my main concern was that the beat be such as to get the crowd and team fired up and sound very cool.

Ok, this whole fire thing made me think. Is the school doing anything at all to push the fire thing? No, not at all. Every single shirt at the bookstore is pushing the Eagle logo. The only people pushing the fire theme are the people on this board. Everything around campus is the eagle logo. It's not of fire or anything. Not every single thing about a school has to be about the mascot. An intro song is about the beat and the music to get people fired up. Start Me Up is one of the best songs to play after and intro just because of the beat and the basic lyrics. The Boys Are Back In Town is a great song to play after a road trip. These aren't mascot related but are universally used because they're good for the situation.

Good point SJ...This year's basketball team had the starting lineup announced to Dr. Dre/Snoop's "Next Episode"...absolutely nothing about Eagles, but got the crowd fired up...

you guys at winthrop can have lyrics, and we can't.

SJ, our name is the liberty FLAMES. next year we are gonna be coming out to a fire explosion. you dont think it would be a good idea to have the flames come out to a song about fire or something of the sort? the whole crowed wears red. i wonder why?

The whole crowd wears red because it's a school color.

We are the Liberty Flames, our mascot is an Eagle. There's a reason that the little guy dancing around the field is an Eagle. There's a reason that all of the merchandise has Eagles on it.

you guys at winthrop can have lyrics, and we can't.
You contradicted yourself. If we can't have lyrics, we can't have song about Flames. I'd like to hear how that would work without lyrics. Good job.

What? You mean Fan The Flame isn't a rousing tune?

Ok some FIRE/Flame/Heat songs:

"Feel the Heat" Power Station
"The Heat is On" Don Henley (I think)
"Fire Woman" The Cult (Appropriate Group!)
"Fire" Jimi Hendrix
"Fire and Ice" Pat Benetar
"Jump Into The Fire" Metallica w/Dave Mustane
"Hot Hot Hot" Buster Poindexter
"Hot Girls In Love" Loverboy
"Hot in the City" Billy Idol and others
"Fire and Rain" James Taylor
"We Didn't Start the Fire" Billy Joel
"Fire on Fire" Alabama
"Fight Fire w/Fire" Kansas (AWESOME song)
"The Sign of Fire" The Fixx
"Unforgettable Fire" U2
"Open Fire" Tupac
"Eternal Flame" Bangles (I think)
"The Flame" Cheap Trick
"Burning Like A Flame" Dokken (the most underappreciated 80's hair band)
"Take Hold of the FLAME" Queensryche

Ok that is all I can think of off the top of my head I am sure there are more, but this is a start.

The new logo as you know is a tribal flames eagle combining both elements that the school has used. So yes the eagle logo is everywhere, but it's a tribal flame eagle, not just like any other eagle design. The school does push the flames. At basketball games, I saw flames on the screens many times. And from what LU's BM said they will have flames at both football and basketball games now. I think the flames give us a unique approach as compared to other schools that use eagles. I agree that not everything has to be either way, just as the logo is a combination of both an eagle and flames, we should use both in marketing game days. Here's the original press release regarding the new logo:

Liberty University Athletic Department Launches New Logo
November 19, 2003 • Lynchburg, Va.

The Liberty University Athletic Department officially launched a new athletic department logo today at a press conference held in the Grand Lobby of the Arthur S. DeMoss Learning Center, giving members of the media and the student body their first official look at a new Liberty Flames logo.

The new logo will give the Athletic Department a fresh identity; representing a more polished and modern look for all of its athletic programs. The new Liberty Flames logo, which will be used on all athletic uniforms, publications, merchandise and marketing materials, will replace other athletic logos.

"The new logo is a striking representation of the determination of the Liberty University athletic teams," said Dr. John M. Borek, Jr., President of Liberty University. "The emphasis upon the eagle portrays the strength, fortitude, courage and grace characteristic of our athletes. The sleek image brings to mind a sense of movement that will lend itself to versatility in design and application."

Liberty University and Prototype Advertising, a locally owned and operated marketing agency based in the historic district of downtown Lynchburg, have spent the past several months working side-by-side to further the image of Liberty University on a local, regional and national basis. The first official step in this process was the creation of a new and centralized identity for all athletic programs.

"We are thrilled and excited with our new logo," commented Kim Graham, Liberty University Director of Athletics. "This new mark is truly something that we can be proud of and gives our athletic programs a distinctive appearance. I am excited about the new look for Liberty University athletics and believe that it will be something that the student body, alumni, fans and friends of our athletic program around the country will embrace immediately."

The new Liberty Flames logo encompass two separate features that the Liberty University Athletic Department has used for years, but never used them together in such a fashion. The Eagle, featured on the top of the logo, was made with a "tribal flame look" and a sleek intimidating face, giving it a more aggressive appearance. This logo joins the nickname, the Flames, with the school's Eagle mascot and is remarkably different from any other college or professional logo.

"Prototype Advertising wanted to develop a look for Liberty University that was up to date, as well as consistent throughout the entire Athletics program," stated Josh Oppenheimer, Principle at Prototype Advertising Inc. "We hope this will help Liberty gain more recognition as an institution that continues to set the bar higher in all its athletic endeavors. The fans of Liberty University deserve nothing less than any other university or college in America and this identity should once again prove they belong among the elite in the NCAA."

History Of The Flames Nickname The Liberty University athletic teams were nicknamed the Flames in 1974. No other team claimed this unique distinction until the spring of 1982 when the student body of the University of Illinois at Chicago voted in the Flames through a write-in campaign. Their choice was based upon the fact that the Chicago fire started only three blocks from the campus.

The student body also made the choice for Liberty in 1974 when they chose the Flames over several other choices. The decision was based upon the school's motto, "Knowledge Aflame."

Liberty began in 1971 as Lynchburg Baptist College with green and gold as the school's colors. In 1976, the name was changed to Liberty Baptist and the colors to red, white and blue. In 1985, the college obtained university status and the name was changed to Liberty University. Throughout these changes, the Flames remained as the nickname for Liberty's athletic teams.

In 1980, the Eagle was designated as the new Flames mascot. An Eagle was selected because of the patriotic symbolism and connection with the school name - Liberty. It was designed with the Flames' nickname in mind. Thus, the flaming torch clutched in the Eagle's left talon was included with the original mascot renderings.

I don't think anyone here has questioned that. However, being that the name of the team is Flames, it would not be strange to push flames related themes. Yes back to the scoreboard

I think we find some type of rock song with a good beat at the beginning and go from there.

Perhaps the mascot should invest in a torch of some sort and carry it around in his "talon." (echoing in the background, do the chickens have large talons...but I digress.) Though you run into the problem of portability when he doesn't want to carry it.

Also, though it would never be used on campus for intro music, Prodigy Firestarter.

The intro to Bite To Break Skin by Senses Fail would be awesome. You could have flames shoot up when the guitars hit the power chords. Then, when the drums start, the players come out. Add to that there aren't lyrics for a while in the song and it's golden.

LOL - That is what VT does and my point in bringing this up in the first place. To tell you the truth I didn't even know what song it was until I read it somewhere that it was the intro to Metallica's "Enter Sandman". I just knew it sounded cool and got the stadium all hyped up. Whatever tune it is, it's only played for a little bit.

NOw that the thread is COMPLETELY hijacked....
Let us always remember that the PA booth was assaulted several years ago because there was MOTOWN music playing!! Then there were all the letters when it was switched to "rock" (Creed, etc) with decent lyrics. Music will ALWAYS be a sensitive topic at LU. But now that we have a better sound system maybe it would sound better. I always like to see the old "Holier then thou" fuddy duddies get all up in a dander when anything with a guitar or drums comes across the pa, but I have a little sadistic streak in me!!

Don't even get me started on music in the stadium. Anyone that has ever been to a baseball game with me has heard that sermon.

Let's be honest with ourselves the best music to get the athletes and the fans pumped up is hip-jop music. I know that we cannot play almost any of the lyrics, but the instrumentals to those songs are just as good.

I disagree. In basketball, hip hop is good. In football, I think rock is a lot better.
