SCAR,

To research a digital camera purchase you can't beat this site:

www.steves-digicams.com

In addition to detailed reviews, specs, and pictures of the camera from every imaginable angle, they also show you where it is available for the best prices on line and link to those websites. Steve also shares Sly and Scorchy's taste in webpage color schemes.

dpreview.com is the best review site on the Internet, IMHO. It's incredibly in-depth, though. It's definitely not for those who tend to skip long paragraphs with technical words. :D

I guess I should have prefaced my "can't beat it" with "if your not a tekkie".

you'll love it :nod

my blackfriday consisted of bagging 2 canadian geese.

the reason why it was a steal is because it was clear skys and a full moon.

for those who aren't geese/duck hunters full moon and clear skys = geese fly at night

we had 2 smaller flocks come in....the first one was 4 geese and were easy to get in.

the other flock took quite a bit calling....i need to brush up...

anyway, we were surprised to see any..let alone shoot any...

I don't know which one they have, but I highly recommend the SD1000. It's lightweight, compact (about the size of a deck of cards), takes great pictures, pretty good video and supports the use of the new SDHC media, so you can take a lot of pictures and video. It runs around $250.00 normally.
circuitcity.com currently has the SD1000 for 149.99

That's tempting because I want a pocket camera to complement my long zoom prosumer (Panasonic FZ8), but I really want something waterproof, which is going to set me back a bit more.

You could just buy the waterproof casing....I'm sure you wouldnt need to use it but so much

the goose are just easier to hunt for. with my limited time (2 kids under 3) i dont' have time to boat out to the spread.

i drive to a cornfield surrounded by about 3 ponds that hold lots of geese. throw out the 50 geese in packs of 6 and get in the blind. its super easy.

i too would rather be hunting ducks right now....

geese are so stupid...especially migrators....

That's an amazing deal. I'd buy it. It's worth the $250-ish I paid, and it's certainly worth far more than the $149.99 Circuit City's charging. Wow.

I got up at 430 and got a $200 necklace for 50 bucks, and a pizza maker for 25, because I need good pizza down here (Brought down some Mezza Luna pizza sauce medic, so Im in good shape).

Not sure which one is a better deal yet, I really like pizza

Yeah, probably not. Point-and-shoots are great for portability and taking to concerts, but if you want the flexibility and options of an SLR, you should get an SLR too. My goal is to have a great point-and-shoot (done) and a great SLR (not done).

I love my Canon EOS 400D. :D

I don't have a point and shoot (aside from my old 2.1MP Canon PowerShot), but I've found very little need for one since I bought my SLR. Very rarely I have thought it'd be nice not to haul out the SLR for some things. Then I convince myself to do it anyway and I'm always glad I did. The picture quality is so far superior that it's worth it.

I may have to get an SLR for work.

It'll be the best thing I've ever bought that can be taken off on my taxes.

I actually looked into that. There are 2 options for "waterproofing" a digital camera. The first is a silicon "skin" which costs about $15 and will protect against rain, dust or a brief accidental dunking. The second is the true waterproof housing which in the case of the SD1000 costs more than the camera (at least at Circuit City's sale price). This is rated waterproof for diving down to 130 ft. Since I am planning to use it while snorkeling, the first won't work and the second is overkill and is too costly/bulky.

I'm looking at a Pentax W30, which is a 7mp pocket camera with features similar to the Canon SD1000 and almost as small, but it has an internal zoom lens and the battery and card slot covers have silicon seals. It is rated for 2 hours at 5 meters depth; which is good enough for my needs. Best price on line right now is about $240. I'm holding off in hopes the price comes down or perhaps something better comes out. Don't need it til my next vacation in Jan or Feb.
