winthrop always schedules a game after the Big South tournament to prepare for the NCAA's. this year their opponent is College of Charleston and this would be their last game of the year.

Liberty Sweeps Winthrop for First Big South Volleyball Title Since 2001

The Lady Flames celebrate the 2007 Big South Volleyball Championship.
November 17, 2007
Lynchburg, Va.
» Box Score

For the first time since 2001, the Liberty volleyball team captured the Big South Volleyball Championship, Saturday afternoon at the Vines Center. A true team effort allowed the top-seeded Lady Flames to sweep second-seeded Winthrop, 3-0 (30-17, 30-23, 32-30), ending the Eagles’ five-year reign as conference champions.

Liberty’s fourth Big South title came courtesy of its 16th-consecutive win. The Lady Flames have matched the 1997 squad’s school record for most wins as a Division I program, as Liberty is now 26-7. Meanwhile, Winthrop saw its 17-match Big South Championship winning streak ended. The Eagles close the 2007 season at 20-11.

No kidding that was brilliant...I like that on a lot of levels...even if you dont make it to the NCAA's it's training your team that there is a bigger world outside of the BSC

Kallie played lights out....I may have yelled great set about 20 times, she's making sets that just werent there...it's unreal...during one of the matches I was sitting with the Libero's dad for WU and he kept talking about how that girl is a gamer and makes things happen when it's just not there....he liked her alot...and obviously his daughter did too coming out taking a picture with her

and for the record Jess Nelson is an animal on the back row....27 digs in 3 games...do some fact checking on that, that doesnt happen a lot in BIG games...she's sick back there

I dont even need to mention the normals like Nic, Bacon, Mc

I will mention Al though...I love her role, she's put in a position to to succeed and she comes through

Ohhhh....2 things....1st I think Kal would get those two extra votes needed to win POY (which I called her the true POY throughout tonite) 2nd we won game 3 by two points.....and Kal was player of the tourny (when it matters most)

It has been hours, but I'm still on the phone with parents, family and friends... everyone is talking about the team and what they have done.

I don't know what will happen next, but this has turned into a unique season and team. How fun. How rewarding. How good for the future of the progam.

When coach Pinder came out to Oregon to talk to Kallie and us, all he could say is, "We are building something special, and your style of play is what we are looking for. If you feel the call in your heart to play for Liberty, know that you are going to be part of the building phase. Winning a Big South Championship and playing in the NCAA tournament is our goal, but it may not happen right away."

Now coach can say to blue-chip players and their families, "We are a winning program with a very bright future, and you can be part of it. If you feel called to play with us, you would be part of our goals to be a Top 20 program."

Todays Big South Championship will open the eyes of 17 year olds across America. It will also touch the hearts of a few college players who want to transfer to a Christian school that can win at the D1 level (the Chelaine's of the volleyball world).

In my mind, we are one or two years ahead of schedule due to:
- Nicki's tallent
- Jessica's big-time return
- Chelaine's trust in the Lord for her life
- Lara's back-row play this year
- Karyl's athletic ability
- Ashley's blocking and hitting
- Al's 7th man points
- MAP's leadership
- and the hard working players on the bench

What has happened today is a blessing from God, and I don't say that lightly. I marvel at His interest in the Liberty volleyball program.

May the Lord bless and keep all those who are part of the volleyball program.

First, I have to say what class WEF has exhibited all season. Second, Winthrop showed a lot of class tonight in joining with our ladies in prayer immediately after the match when you know they were hurting emotionally. Third, if I am right, Sitzman showed class by coming up and congratulating Nicki after the match. It was a well fought match. Game 3 especially.

I have to point out that Kallie did something really great at the start of the match. We had given up the first 4 points of the game I believe, and we were getting ready for serve receive, and Kallie was smiling (almost laughing) and called out the play and it just seemed to get rid of everyone's jitters and we really started to play our game.

How about Jessica? She really just played in the stratosphere tonight. She had more digs than a manual laborer at an excavation site! She hit lights out, too.
When you looked at the scoreboard after the match, you could really easily see why we won. All six players listed on the board at the end of the match had multiple kills, none less than 5. Winthrop couldn't concentrate on stopping any one or two players. We just had too many offensive weapons. Then you look in the digs column and you saw 3 players with double digit digs. They really had trouble getting the balls down even when they got it past the block.

I hope whomever we play in the first round takes us for granted. If we pass well, they will have a hard time blocking us.

Lynchburg News & Advance
November 18, 2007

Liberty completed its march through the Big South Volleyball Tournament with a 30-17, 30-23, 32-30 sweep of Winthrop in the championship game Saturday at Vines Center.

It was the first time since 2001 that the Flames (26-7) won the conference tournament and, in doing so, earned the Big South's automatic NCAA Tournament bid.

The tournament selection show will be shown on ESPNU at 8 p.m., on Nov. 25.

Very sorry to say that this grm was not in town - but he's EXTREMELY happy for the girls, the coach, & LU. What a season, what a tournmament, & what a great championship!

(btw, it's not always that easy to win both the league & the tournament.. or even to tie & win. It's happened a lot lately in the BS, but it's still quite a trick to pull). Again, great job!!

Sorry I am a day late posting, I just came down from my high! Being at the game was awesome to see. Gymtalk, I know it was a tough one for you to miss. Kallie was a true mastermind last night! What was really a cool thing to witness was when our girls got behind, there was absolutely no panic. You could see it in their eyes that they knew they were going to win. I talked with a few of the players before the game and they were very business like and not too worried about the "Big Game."

I finally put a face to a name last night. Thesportscritic found me on the court during the celebration and introduced himself to me. It was great meeting you. I will be at the tourny next weekend so I will let you know how the team does at the "tune up" for the big dance.

Chopertony - You're back there for nearly two weeks?! Nice!!! I'm sure Ashley will enjoy having you there for Thanksgiving and the tune-up tournament. Ashley was so strong at the net... nothing got by her (they avoided the middle after the first two games) and her offensive points were so important! There were several "Proud Papa" plays... I'm sure you got some high-fives.

Gymtalk, yes I am still here and enjoying every minute! Hopefully I have a job when I get back! We celebrated the big win by driving into DC the next day for exploring various museums and Arlington. It was a great time. I will ask about a Championship t-shirt while I am here.

How do we view the tourny seedings on Sunday? I heard ESPNU. I only get ESPN & ESPN2. Is ESPNU a separate pay type station or something you get off the internet? Let me know. I am being very mercenary when I say I want the team to play a west coast team. My guess is that they will end up at the Florida Regional. I think the toughest regional will be the one at Penn State. We will find out soon...............

ESPNU is a seperate cable channel (like ESPNEWS) that many cable providers around the country do not carry. If you don't get it on your cable package, you might be able to order it from your provider as part of a "sports package" or the like, or you'll have to find a friend who has DirecTV or Dish - they both carry ESPNU.
