It is a collegiate expectation that for every hour you spend in a class you SHOULD spend 2 to 3 hours outside of class doing work for the class. That makes it around a 40 hour per week experience. As for going to a game, since you are in a coaching basketball class, it is not unreasonable for the professor to state that you should attend 3 contests to see varying style of coaching. IMHO, it would be better to open it up to various types of games. Say for instance the contrast of some college and high school teams are coached, men/boy and girls/women. I usually cut classes shorter here and there to "make up" for the time that was spent at the game, but that is just me.
I think you entirely missed SJ's point, which was that while the students were given notice at the start of the semester about attending some games, they were given about eight hours notice that they would be required to attend tonight's game.

I took coaching basketball. Keeping stats at these games is about as tough as that class gets, and I'm sure any teacher would be understanding if a student had important prior commitments, such as a job.

You were over-simplifying the FACS and SMGT majors in such a horrific way I think both department chairs had a shiver go down their spine when you hit Submit.

that's where the insulting nature of the comment came from. Thanks for taking the humor out of it by having me explain it. What the heck are you guys doing at LU these days? All we did in our dorm was bust on each other. Feelings were hurt, fights ensued and a good laugh was had by all. I think some of you guys would be crying if you ever were in a room with RubberMallet for more than 5 minutes. He's way more of a jerk than I am.

I wasn't offended, but I thought you were seriously arguing.

I make fun of people all the time, too, I just didn't sense the humor at all in what you were saying.

I don't think mallet has ever expressed a thought not laced in some way by sarcasm.

SJ, out of curiosity, what are the coaching classes that are available to you for your coaching minor?

By the way, REAL coaches don't take classes. They screw up their first year and figure it out from then on. (Wait...am I the only one that did that?)

Yall are a bunch of whiners. I actually picked up alot from House's class. I never thought I'd see the day of reading a rick pitino biography and thinking it was good. Plus the three games wern't that bad. he tooks us too see some decent HS games (brookville and that other school down the road that starts with an H) I think the H was good enough to give Hankinson's boy a game that year. Sport Management might be a joke now but it wasn't back 5 years ago with the Olympic report and Sport Finance. The cupcake majors were the education and youth majors. They would be out every night.

Maybe when you were there, but both of those majors have some stretches I don't think anyone who didn't want the degree would want to go through. (Bible 350 with Fink, the education projects/internship late in the degree, etc.)

Sorry Bub, way off on that one. Have you ever heard of Student Teaching? Yeah. That thing where all of your friends are taking lazy courses their final semester and you are at the school doing lesson plans and participating in school activities until 7-8:00 at night. Oh, did I mention you PAY to teach for another teacher who heads to the library to read the paper all day?

That's just the final semester. Anyone who is in elementary ed (not me, but I have some pretty nasty experiences with the subject...) works thier tail off the whole time they are at school. The secondary ed people major in a subject (mine was Social Science) and basically minor in education. Most upper-level education courses are in the evenings while all of your friends are at the basketball games.

Youth majors can defend themselves.

Is that Inductive Bible Study? Took that one through EDP/DLP/LUSLLL whattever acronym they're using this month. Ended up with an A, and learned more than I thought I would.

I'll give ya the Bible 350 project, but it depends how much effort and time you put into it. I saw some blow it off and get the same grade as others who put alot of time into it. On the deal with paying to teach, doesn't every major include internship? I spent my last summer before senior year driving an hour way to work for free. It's the same with any major.

Yeah, 'cause deconstructing TS Eliot's The Wasteland or explaining calculus derivatives or even getting students to find the Iraq on a map is the same as going to Basketball class. (Now, I am not saying that the SMGT major isn't rigorous, but, really, these others as cupcake?...Gotta call :BS on this one, too.)

I suppose one could argue that the intro to Educ classes are more of the cake variety (freshman level), but after that, the coursework projects, student teaching (multiple sessions throughout the major) and the time investment would likely make some of the tough guys from the SMGT major cry...nothing like watching a 16 year old reduce a 22 year old tough guy to a stammering spectacle. With the exception of the Nursing majors, few are more demanding than the ed major (and its counterparts Biology, Math et al) in time demands and courseload.

One addendum: The secondary ed, although technically a major-minor set-up, is more like a double major (also many more credits required for graduation than other majors save Nursing.)

That said, likewise, Youth Majors can fend for themselves. That's a party in a box major.

Plus, the student teaching is stacked on top of going to a slate of courses back on campus. Up until the advent of distance ed, most internships were done during the summer as a full time job, sans the additional mandatory classroom time. (I say mandatory because some may choose to pursue coursework while they do their internship, but they are not necessarily integrated as such.)

But like I said, I'm sure the SMGT major is rigorous in its own way, but the cupcake editorial was a bit ludicrous...

Right now it's just Intro to Coaching, Coaching Football, and Coaching Basketball. What they're wanting to do is take away one of the required health classes and making Coaching I and Coaching II. What that would do is spend four weeks on every major sport teaching you the rules behind it and strategies, etc. For anyone wanting to be a High School AD, it would be a great class.

I've picked up nothing from the class. As for thinking the SMGT major is a joke now, we still have the Olympic project, we still have Sport Finance, we still have Sport Law, we've added O&A, Sport Marketing has a huge project, etc.

And for anyone complaining about student teaching or anything like that: Student teaching at Liberty can get six credit hours and is around 300 hours long. The SMGT internship is 400 hours long and 3 credit hours.

No complaining, and not trying to bait a "my major was tougher than yours" flame war--just pointing out the non-cupcake nature of an Educ Degree. (Not to nitpick, well to nitpick...it's really 300 in-classroom hours. That does not count class prep time which calculated as an average by school districts runs about .5 hour per instruction hour for class prep (on the conservative side) and then another .5 hour per instructional hour for grading, parent conference calls, after school remediation/conferences et al.)
