How and why can teachers force students to come to classes outside of the scheduled time? My Coaching Basketball professor is making us attend three basketball games and keep stats and other crap like that. I scheduled a class between the time of 10:50 and 12:05 for a reason. I enjoy going to basketball games as a fan and don't really agree with having to go as a student.

Yes, I'm whining.

Making it a requirement is okay though?

I know, but how can it be required instead of regular class? We sign up for a class knowing it'll be between time A and time B and that the rest of our time is our time.

To provide each student an opportunity to:
1. Identify multiple and diverse coaching philosophies via videotape, guest speaker, and class presentation.
2. Develop an understanding of coaching applications and the inherent differences in the context of Christian versus non-Christian environments.
3. Identify the proper teaching/learning strategies consistent with various levels of student development.
4. Facilitate a coaching type of clinic through group presentation of topics pertaining to fundamental skills and specialized game strategies.
5. Utilize current technological skills (learned in the foundational and investigative studies) to produce a class presentation, assigned paper, and projects.
To achieve maximum educational benefits, it is expected that students will attend classes (see attendance requirement). Whether absences are excused or unexcused, students are responsible for obtaining all materials, information, and assignments. Students are expected to attend class prepared to discuss announced topics. Preparation will consist of previously assigned readings from support materials and related research from various sources such as the viewing of basketball videotapes. In addition to expecting students to attend classes and develop a broad base of knowledge from the literature and support materials, students also will be required to complete a major project (basketball notebook), the extent of which will be discussed in class. Periodic written exams, attendance at local practice sessions, and inter-scholastic and intercollegiate game attendance will comprise additional requirements and evaluative standards for students.
I still don't see how they can do that. He's basically giving us three games that we HAVE to go to, handing it out on the day of the first game.

Nursing and science students have to do this stuff all the time. Old and New Testament classes used to require to you go to elmer towns' Thomas Road sunday school class a certain amount of times. It's college, quit crying.

Nurse and science students know going into it they have to do it. They normally know in advance when they have to do things. We were told at 11am that we had to be at the game.

Supe...sounds like a legit gripe. Expectations (are so we are told in faculty meetings) are supposed to be laid out the first class.

He just told us which games to go to today. I have no problem going to women's games and keeping stats, etc. During men's games, I've been asked to be there and help lead the students from Coach McKay himself. To me, that means a lot.

He's taking attendance. I'd do the work if given a chance at another time. I have no problem with that. He's letting the basketball players do it after-the-fact, but I don't know if he would allow anyone else.

I wouldn't mind going to a women's game and doing stats. The problem is if he lets me.

you going to a women's game SJ. wow. have fun with those stats. you could probably put 20 TO's on your stat sheet because that is how many times they turn the ball over most of the time.

It's going to be something like this, the majority of the time:

"Did you get that last foul?"
"Who just took that shot?"
"How many TOs do we have left?"

and you're going to miss half of the game.

I hated it--we didn't have to go to a women's game, thankfully, but I could only imagine how awful it would have been.

oh well then that makes sense to a degree, although you should have to keep track of "non-traditional" stats. like i know at my alma mater we had a student worker keep track of how many passes we made on each possession and then right beside it what the result of the possession was (turnover, made shot, missed shot, etc.). that's more in-line with what a person would have to do starting out in collegiate coaching... if they are makign you keep track of rebounds, field goal attempts, and other traditional stats then they are wasting your time.

Ok, whining over. The professor actually had some leniency with me which I wasn't expecting. I explained the situation and we worked it out. Thank you understanding professors.
