PA and FYI A couple of HSBC/U bands were asked NOT to come or come back because of ther halftime shows. The first one that comes to mind is Nofold State. You are right though, those bands are AWESOME and I wish the tight shirts/wads at LU would let em come, b/c believe it or not it gets people excited about being there. Even more then our beloved Flames anthemn we here every week. Are we still going to be hearing from the Phatom of the Opera? I remember several years ago when USC was in teh Vegas Bowl they showed clips fo them Downtown and then at Half Time. They were great!

Hey, Hey!!

When I was in the band @ LU, we not only performed at Deleware State, we actually practiced with them beforehand in warm-ups. This was the only band we did this with...

We also went to Hampton, and many of the MEAC schools...correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Norfolk State made the decision to stop comming to LU...

LU has seem to cut back on the away games, as have all the other schools in D-1AA, as far as I can see...We used to go to 2 a year...and we'd always see someone else bring their band...

Appy State used to bring there's, but the last two home games they didn't...

I think its budgets, not us telling them not to come...I could be wrong...but I'm all for bringing in the SWAC, MEAC bands....

And also, the marching bands for the last three years that LU has fielded have been EXCELLENT...3 years ago they did an Irish Show with the "I will Arise/Irish Tune from County Derry/He looked beyond my faults and saw my needs/Old Apple Blossom Tree, and song with 1,000 other names" warm up that got a standing ovation at the high school show at City Stadium...

A year later they did an awsome show ripped from the BLue Devil's "When a Man Loves a Woman"...again standing ovations at city stadium...

After that, they did a New York Show, sort of ripping the base percussion switching solo thing from THe Cadets of Bergan County...that year, a bunch of highschools came to Williams Stadium for a show (EC Class, Fuqua, Salem, and about 5 others)....the LU band program is getting a lot of respect and growing in size, and interest is increasing...

And we're eveing bring secular high schools to campus for shows...and also about 5 years ago, LU actually hosted a DCI show, the Cadets, Crossmen, BlueCoats, Carolina Crown, and others showed up. George Hopkins from the Cadets said that it was Williams Stadium was an excellent facility and the volunteers ran the show well. (mostly lu band students and alumni)

My fondest band memory is still marching halftime at the Meadowlands. I've still got my poster-sized picture of that one somewhere. . .

And if they do the DCI thing again, I can promise that my wife and I will be there to volunteer. Wish I had known they had done it back then.

PHOENIX didn't we all get a video of that? I lost my copy one of the many times I've moved since the 90's so I'm wondering if any others are out there.

I had a video once upon a time, but have no idea what's happened to it. I'll have to see if my wife has hers.

Hey guys. I just received an email from Dr. Kerr, and the band will be taking two trips this coming fall. One trip has not been made known yet, but the other trip is to travel to the Wake Forest game. The show is close to being decided, and the band size is already greater than last year's, with many more possible members yet to be added.

Great news that the band is growing. The louder the music the better.

maybe we won't have to bring in drones that can't play an instrument but just march around to fill out the formation?

Then again, maybe thats yet another thing that hasn't been done since the 80s. I'm rambling again, aren't I?

roflol

That was my freshman year. They brought in people to hold clarinets and march. I actually started marching about then -- people were shocked to find out I could actually play.

Hey guys. Here is the show, which was revealed yesterday during wind ensemble rehersal:

Let the Music Move Your Feet
Boston Bolero: The Boston Crusaders 2003 version of Bolero
Moondance
Swing, Swing, Swing
Got To Get You Into My Life by Earth, Wind, and Fire
Conga by Gloria Estefan (show title taken from this song)

There will numerous solos, and the band membership is rapidly approaching 170 for this season. Trombones will be playing with brand-new, silver, slide trombones. Lots of excitement for the upcoming season with the Wake Forest game, our third annual USSBA high school competition on October 7th, and a second trip, which is close to being finalized, in addition to a much-improved football team to cheer for. Unfortunately, I graduate, and will have to watch it all from the stands.

Are you guys only doing one show? There's 5 home games. My high school even did two shows, along with parades and competitions.

s far as I know...but Dr Kerr has been fairly tight lipped as to what we are doing this coming fall and the show announcement along with the Wake Forest game trip are the only things he has let on

SuperJon,

It's way better to do only one show, and do it well, like LU does, than to do two or more lousy ones.

Most high schools that compete in TOB or BOA or groups like that only do 1 show...you get better and better and add more things to the show you have...most highschools that due more than one show don't compete, and they aren't as entertaining to watch...a lot of standing still, b/c there's not enough time to learn more drill (or at least do it well)

As far as your school SJ, I'll bet they do separate shows for football games, but they only do one show in competitions...some hs bands do that so that they don't have to drag all kinds of equipment to away football games...and it gives the kids a break from the harder competiton show.

DCI corps also only do one show...and I'll go to a show in Roanoke and see the Cadets, and then I'll look forward to watching the exact same show with the changes on PBS (okay, now ESPN, but I don't have cable)

I know some colleges do more than one show, but that is very unfortunate...normally the drill that is done with bands that do multiple shows is watered down and not nearly as fun to watch.

IMO - its fine to do separate music for parades...but especially in college, you only have 6 hours of practice during the week, and a couple of hours on Saturday...I like the way LU focuses on one show...and I think that most people that have been in marching bands in hs or college would agree!

You're preaching to the choir when you talk about marching band to me. We always did one show that was our main show and was extremely technical, and then for homecoming (generally around Halloween), we'd do a Halloween show. App State does a couple shows each year that are all extremely good. They're one of the best traditional (i.e. DCI style) bands in the country. At a college football game, I would rather see something with a little less movement and a little less technical stuff than the same technically sound show every week. That's just my opinion.

In response to performing multiple shows. While I would love to learn new drill and music every month or so, there are members of the band who have never marched before they come to LU (I was in that boat). As a band member, I would take one intricate show over two or three shows with ten or so sets. Not to mention, our band budget couldn't sustain having to buy multiple shows, as well as purchase the equipment that we do every year, and cover the band scholarships and trips. All the music that is performed is also written just for us, and it takes a good month or so to get our show completed, which makes performing more than one show difficult. Finally, having three months of performance/practice doesn't allow for time to completely change shows, when we are rehersing six hours a week, plus game days.
By the way, as far as slide covers on the trombones go, that is not going to happen. If anything, maybe some sort of protective covering for practice, but there isn't a reason to cover up the glimmering silver slides on gamedays.

SuperJon,

Thanks for the explanation...

I respect your opinion, because you know the difference between the shows...I've seen Appy State's band before, they are very good.

Of course, we could take this discussion a completely different direction...MEAC and SWAC schools normally do more than one show...and they sometimes do "more simple" marching, with a lot of highstep stuff...

But there's so much dancin' and stuff going on that the crowds go nuts! But in my opinion, I agree with cdbillton...I like LU doing one show...

It's hard to combine both, though. A Traditional Drum Corp (The Magic of Orlando) one time tried to do sort of a combo highsteppin show with slow drill mixed in with some technical corps style stuff...really weird - I don't think they did that well that year...(although 9th or so at World Championships probably isn't that bad...but I think they were expecting better).

I guess the fact that I'm good and can learn charts and music really quick kind of distort my thinking. I could probably still play some of my high school music and I haven't played it in two years. And by play it I mean play it from memory. Music comes easy to me.

The band attempted two shows one year (want to say it was 89/90, but I'm not 100% sure). Both shows were OK, but we always had the feeling that if we'd focused on one, it would have been awesome.

This year's show sounds excellent.
