does he upload them somehwere like FSN does? I think everybody should be required to put their junk on Flickr so I can see the properties of how the picture was taken. That kid Oliver finally did and he's doing some amazing stuff with some pretty basic equipment. It gives me hope.

I can crop a bit since the 70-200 is less than half the price of the 300.
Our discussions always go back to the good stuff.....

I picked up that 300 f4.0 locally for around $850....but it is an f4--to get down to 2.8 you are talking serious dough. The local paper guys have 400 f2.8s and so on. I have to use my 70-200 f2.8 for high school (night games)...and push it to 1600 and 3200. Lots of grain, compounded by cropping. That's why I'm hoping the local team can make it to the state championship so we can have a day game. I don't mind cropping occasionally but when you're retouching 150 pics, it's a lot of work, even when you can automate photoshop processes, cause cropping is such a perfectionist thing.

To use that 18-55mm you're gonna need to find a way to get to the sidelines and then LOOK OUT cause it'll be hard to get close enough to the action unless you're willing to take a hit! I'd concentrate on the sideline shots--coaches, the bench, the fans, etc.

Check on FredMiranda.com for a 70-200 f2.8 and 300 f4.0; I've seen a number of them on there.

I have been meaning to call or email Les to see about getting some of his photos. I would like a copy of the one that is on the cover of the latest Liberty Journal. I had never gone to SmugMug.com, where the dr put his photos, but that's a cool site. It allows me to crop the photos to my liking if needed.

Since he works for the school, the images are all copyrighted to LU. They have an internal digital catalog (which is part of the project I'm working on). It's pretty extensive.

What kind of SLR do you have? If you have a Canon, I can't recommend the Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens enough. I got mine for $79 new on Amazon and it produces some great results. (Especially if you like bokeh.) Examples...

I wondered about the noise issue. That's the only issue I've found with my camera (a Rebel XTi/400D). Everything works great, but at ISO 800 and 1600 the noise is more prominent than I'd care for. I think that's one of the reasons I favor my 50mm f/1.8 so heavily. It gets enough light in the lens that I don't have to worry about it too much. Obviously, it has plenty of limitations though. As much as I'd love to justify another camera body, I'm only a year into my SLR experience, so I'll stick with the 400D for now. I'm going to have to get a long lens of some sort of I keep going to as many football games as I have this year, though. I can't keep coming away without any good shots!

nah, I went with the Nikon and the 18mm f/3.5 lense it came with. I was in BestBuy last night staring down a 200mm lense. It was big.

Actually noise is a function of ISO...I don't think the Rebel XT goes up to 3200. Come to think of it, if you're shooting daytime shots, a 70-200 f4.0 could be had for the low $500-range. It's decent as long as you use a monopod. There's also a software solution called "Noise Ninja" which is pretty good at reducing noise. I use a 20D on my monopod, and a 5D on my shoulder with that 70-200/f2.8 or 24-70/f2.8.

And that 50mm is a terrific lens for the price. Not good for football, but I've seen people use 'em in basketball. I have the 85mm f1.8 which is nice also, around $330.

Yes, I understand ISO and noise. I was just saying that at ISO 800 and 1600 on the 400D, there's too much noise. It could be better. And yeah, 1600 is as high as it goes. I don't think they could get 3200 out of it with the level at noise I see at 800 and 1600.

Id bet PA. I sometimes sit next to Mike in Coaching FOotball class...he is always drawing up blocking schemes and he even hooked me up with a page full of defensive formations to help with my playbook project

We'll be getting a shot, awesome pics Doc. Thank you.
One thing Mike & I did at around age 7, was play chess. Now it's just a bigger board and he loves to think about it almost as much as playing.

Talked with Les about getting copies of some of his work and he said that they are going to be partnering with another company that will be offering high quality photos with matting and frames. Should be a nice option to get some great photos.
