Liberty head wrestling coach Jesse Castro has announced the hiring of Pat Sole and Paul Anthony as assistant coaches.
On February 24, 2005, the Athletic Department announced the reinstatement of the wrestling program after an 11-year hiatus as Liberty sponsored the sport from 1974 to 1994. The wrestling program, which will begin competition in the fall of 2006, will be Liberty’s 18th NCAA Division I program.
“We are excited to have Pat and Paul join our staff,” stated Castro. “Between the two of them, they bring over 40 years of coaching experience. They are a great fit for the program as well as Liberty University.”
“Paul has great contacts in Virginia and Pat in West Virginia as well as Ohio. I am confident they will be tremendous contributors to the overall vision of our program.”
Sole, 1983 Liberty University graduate, returns to his alma mater after 18 years as a wrestling coach at Parkersburg South High School in Parkersburg, W.Va. A graduate of the prep-school, Sole helped guided his alma mater to 10 state championships and three state championship runner-ups. He also had five nationally ranked teams. Individually, he coached seven high school All-Americans. 11 wrestlers from his program went to participate in NCAA Division I programs and two wrestled at NAIA programs.
As a competitor, Sole was a high school All-American at Parkersburg South capturing the state title twice and finishing as the runner-up once. He was the 1978 Junior World Champion and a member of the 1978 United States Junior team, while placing four times nationally in Freestyle and Greco wrestling. Under coach Bob Bonheim at Liberty, Sole was a National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA ) All-American, a 1980 Olympic Trials regional champion and a 1980 Olympic National Trials final place winner, which qualified him as an alternate for the 1980 Olympic team. He also served as the Flames team captain in his junior and senior seasons. Sole and his wife Vickie have two sons, Dustin and Cody.

Anthony comes to Liberty from Brookville High School in Lynchburg, where he has served as the head wrestling coach and a physical education instructor for the past 16 years. During his time at Brookville, Anthony compiled a dual meet record of 202-42-1, while capturing 16 district championships, three region titles and 12 top ten finishes at the state championships. Individually, he coached eight individual state champions, 46 state place winners, 32 regional champions and 96 district champions.
Anthony has also coached at the collegiate level as a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech and at Chowan College in Murfreesboro, N.C., where he led the Braves to a 25-5 record and had three All-Americans. As a high school competitor, he won a Virginia state championship and was a two-year letter winner at Virginia Tech. He and his wife Sherry have three children, Matt, Daniel and Diana

only beat you by four days- but you're not doing too bad GIMME! http://flamefans.com/viewtopic.php?t=503 (4/13: 0956)

good report though- I only had names. This sounds like a great start, these guys have impressive backgrounds that will really help our recruiting efforts. As I posted in the other thread, we evidently have about 11 guys committed and looking for a few more.

Hopefully we'll hear in the next week or so.

I worked with Paul Anthony during my days at TRBC. He and his wife worked with Barry Rice in the Middle School department. They are FANTASTIC people and they have raised some great kids. They are a GREAT addition to the program and I'm pumped to hear that they're involved. Another quality coach brought in who has great Christian background along with quality credentials. Great hire!

When I was running around campus trying to chase down the basketball team yesterday, I saw Castro and Paul Anthony and Paul's son Daniel (who was our wrestler of the year in 2005) chatting. I know Daniel is a student at LU, so I assume he'll come out. Two of our all-area wrestlers from this year (Rustburg's Heath Maxey and Liberty's Roger Shepherd) have told me they're interesting in checking out LU's program. Maxey is going to attend LU and try to walk on.

welcome, Coach Becker!
Wrestling Program Adds Becker As Assistant Coach

Former George Mason standout Robert Becker has joined the Flames' coaching staff.
August 28, 2006
Lynchburg, Va.

Liberty University head wrestling coach Jesse Castro has announced the addition of former George Mason standout Robert Becker to his coaching staff as an assistant coach.

"I have known Robert for 10 years now,” commented Castro. “I know of few individuals that are so dedicated. He truly is a student of the sport."

Becker, a native of Mickleton, N.J., comes to Liberty after wrapping up a successful, four-year career with the Patriots in 2004. His 109-37 career record ranks fifth all-time in the program’s history.

During his senior season, Becker compiled a 26-9 overall record, wrestling at 141 pounds, while going undefeated in total dual (7-0) and CAA dual (4-0) matches. He was ranked in the Top 20 nationally during his entire senior season in both the Intermat and Amateur Wrestling News polls.

Becker was a three-time team captain at George Mason and was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association Academic All-American team in 2004. The 141-pound wrestler twice qualified for the national tournament and was a champion at the Las Vegas Invitational in 2003.

Castro is quite familiar with the Becker family as he coached Robert’s brother Brandon, a two-time All-American at Indiana, during his high school career.

"The Becker family has been a special friendship for my family and me,” added Castro. “Having Robert come to Lynchburg will be a great opportunity for our program as he will bring his competitive experience as well as coaching experience."

Becker is active in his hometown community as he founded “Team Excel,” a prominent wrestling club in southern New Jersey dedicated to helping train high school student-athletes in the sport.

Becker is currently working for Independence Planning Group, a financial planning firm based out of Blue Bell, Pa., under former Liberty University wrestling graduate, Bill Scanlon (1989). Becker will be working toward a master’s degree in business administration in Liberty's graduate program.
