They're moving all students out of Dorm 7 by the end of the day and moving them elsewhere on campus. Apparently, the foundation is cracked right down the middle and it's to the point that the building is sinking into the ground. They all have to be out of the dorm by 8pm tonight.

those circle dorms have been "rumored" to have these problems for years.

I lived in Dorm 7 on the first floor for three years. This isn't a new problem. It's been sliding off into the ravine for a looong time. There was a crack in the cinder block right above my bed. I always wondered when we'd wake up going for a ride down the hill.

Is it time to tear down the circle dorms yet?

It's been time. The guys in that dorm have until 8pm to have all of their stuff moved out of the dorms. They're sending them to East and all over campus, even putting three beds to a room in East if they have to (granted, this is stuff they're hearing now, nobody's really sure what is gonna happen).

Personally, I think if they can move off campus for two months and their room and board be prorated (meaning they give them back the rest of October, November, and December) then that would be great, but we all know that's not gonna happen.

Hmm. If they tear it down, I'm going to have to get a bucket of brick chips or something. Most of my time at LU was spent in that dorm. It's one of the few that actually has a name. (Maple Leaf)

Heaven forbid it should be three beds to a room.

All of us Old Hags are enjoying this thread.

See, Sly, that's where you're wrong. The three circle dorms are already three beds to a room. The East rooms aren't as big as the ones on the circle, thus throwing three people in there, especially when people paid extra to get the extra space.

at least they got structural engineers (or at least someone who knew what they were looking at) in there before the whole freakin' thing came down.

that would've been horrific.

and if its established that a structure built in that timeframe is deficient- I'd certainly hope "they" are taking a good look at ALL the structures of that type and age.

warm up the 'dozers.

I spent two years in that dorm as well! (7-1, I was the room on the corner nearest the basketball cage whose window faced the street for a year...and in the middle room the second year)

I LOVED that dorm! I never saw any problems with it when I was there (probably Fall of 1994-1996). Although it doesn't shock me that they are having problems.

thankfully my repulsive personality enabled me to drive out roomates on a regular basis- I never finished a semester w/ more than 3- and my last one on dorm 12 there was only 2 of us. Unheard of in the late 80s.

Fortunately I only had one semester when I had 3 other roommates. It was in Dorm 10. It really didn't bother me that much, but it was nice when one of my roommates didn't return the next semester!

There were four beds to a room in the Fall of '97. Does that count as "back in the day"? I had three roommates from day one. By the time I left, it was down to one.

I spent 3 years in 7-2. I was up there from Fall '99 to Spring '02. Some of the best times of my life were spent up there. I didn't get much school work done but we sure had fun. I also stayed on that hall for CFAW in Fall '98 so my only LU dorm experience involves 7-2. We heard back in '99 that it was supposed to have been torn down years earlier and that the foundation was weak. It's time for it to go, but it's kinda sad in a way. If anybody can get pics uploaded of the current state/demolition, that would be great.

Hey, I stayed on your hall for CFAW in 95. Remember me? Just kidding. I thought it was funny because I spent most of the evening in a room that had a "hidden" tv, and a nintendo. They were all covert about it. I think one of the dudes in that room always had dip in his mouth, and they always played Jeopardy on the computer. But that's not the room I stayed in. Just trying to give belcher some flashbacks.

They aren't putting any extra beds in Campus East. The SLD rooms, however, are getting a third roommate and the prayer/overflow rooms were set aside if anything like this needed to be done.

They've had two sets of engineers come in--the first didn't think anything needed to be done--the second wanted to dig underneath to see what the damage was.

Not as big a deal as it's going to be made out to be.

Jon gets his roommate back, temporarily, anyway.
