Is this high school kid really better than TJ Bannister? Bannister was a high level player in the ACC - I think he might be the best guard to play in the BS.

Just FYI, Gottlieb and another analyst on Scout.com listed Winthrop as a potential top 40 recruiting class for this year depending on who the last 2 commits are.

"depending on who the next two commits are" ... that's gotta be the line of the day.

I guess WU's class can go anywhere from 40 to 140, depending on who the next two commits are.

Even that range will be much higher than anything WU or the Big South has pulled before :D

Winthrop is so good. We should just mail them the trophy now...they are soo good.  8)

my question is if you get the #7 player or whatever you said he was at....I'm thinking higher than a "potential" top 40...you should be up there right now until your next recruit brings you back down.

You might wanna check that info, Hankinson had some quality recruiting classes, but the kids just never showed up on campus.....for various reasons. So while you may be high on your commitment, a lot of things can happen between now and the time he can actually put on a uniform.

Winthrop this, Winthrop That, shouldn't we be talking about High Point - I thought they were ranked higher than you. Come on Realist - when Marshall left - Winthrop might as well had transfered to Division 2. It's only a matter of time till you guys start talking about baseball being you only competitive sport.

The ranking of recruits is about as accurate as Bradshaw's jump shot - sometimes they get lucky and hit a few, but most the time their chucking up airballs and bricks. I believe the best player to ever play in the big south talent wise was Dwight Brewington, and I think our next years class will be 200% better than yours.

Why can some on this board not give any credit to other schools? Peele was a phenomenal recruiter at UNCG, he just couldn't get it done on the court. After 8 years under Marshall, he's had to have learned a few things. Will they be at the Marshall level? I doubt it, he was that good, but they're not going to be bad. Like it or not, Winthrop's the most winning team in this conference the past few years overall in all sports.

We're talking about Winthrop because this is a thread essentially about recruiting. Winthrop is still the top-recruiting men's basketball program in our conference, by far. Be happy that someone in our conference is getting this type of attention from somewhere, because when they (Winthrop) help the conference, it only helps Liberty. Its only smart to hope that the other teams in your conference do well, as well as your own school (for us, Liberty), so as to rise the stock of the entire conference.

I guarantee you that those at Winthrop have been begging for national credibility to come from some of the other schools in the conference, because it would legitimize their own accomplishments. Maybe that school is High Point this year, maybe it could be Liberty soon. But give Winthrop the respect they deserve for getting it right these past few years, when Liberty obviously could not.

SuperJon can we get some trash talking in without you always throwing a bucket of water on it? No one is trying to hurt Realist's feelings - just talking trash. My guess is that Realist doesn't continue to post on this board, because everyone agrees with him - how much fun would that be.

I respect your opinion - I and many on this board just don't agree. I personally think that Winthrop got lucky for several years in a row with getting undervalued talent that over achieved at Winthrop. You can change things and sometimes you stop that momentum. It's life - and Peele could be the greatest recruiter, but he hasn't been proven as a head coach - he won one BSC with another coaches players and never did anything else, until he downgraded back to an assistant position - that should tell you something. One comment - Hankensen was known as a good recruiter - look at his coaching record as a head coach!

Winthrop's new slogan should be - "Ah oh - I think we lost our swagger!"

Is your name JK37 or WU37 - the text is too small to read and that sounded like it belongs on the Winthrop board. I was being sarcastic with the High Point statement -

Sarcastic - sar·cas·tic /sɑrˈkæstɪk/ [sahr-kas-tik] –adjective 1.of, pertaining to, or characterized by sarcasm: a sarcastic reply. 2. Using or given to the use of sarcasm: to be sarcastic about ambition.

National Attention? I should thank them because they shine a light on us? Don't we shine a light on this conference also? Josh McDougal, Women's Basketball - Sweet 16, Track Programs? 3 years ago we our recruting class was ranked as high as 19th at one point - no body from our board has mentioned that.

"Wait and see" would be better. Its my opinion that with the conference as wide-open as it is right now, with High Point playing the part of the most serious challenger to WU's throne, everyone will find incentive and motivation to really step it up this season.

High Point hasn't shown up in a big game in the history of their program.

I agree SuperJon - they just have a lot of talent this year and they play in high school gym that gives them a huge home court advantage.

I think VMI will be a very good team too, if they decide this year to actually play defense.

Which is precisely why despite their annointing as this year's favorite (by one measly vote), everyone knows its a wide-open race.

They got the preseason pick because Peele was sandbagging and wouldn't pick his own team first.

Wow, a lot of posts.

I was referencing any particular player about the scout chat, I was just saying what the analysts wrote.

Anyways, as for other comments, I find them quite humorous. It would be like me saying LU's women's team has just gotten lucky for 10 years. Uh, no, 1 year there may be some luck involved, but not over 10 years. WU's program is bigger than a player or coach, if Peele does fail (which I highly doubt) then he'd be out pretty quick. WU has more season ticket holders than the rest of the conference combined, and the program has come a long way. And every few years, everyone says the same thing, oh, waterman and groves are gone, they won't be good anymore, oh they'll suck, Wooten and Lewis are gone, etc, etc.

Success breeds success. That's why when Elena can't spell her last name left, and Katie Feenstra left, LU was still good, players want to go where there is a tradition of winning and a post season birth.

I'm not saying it couldn't be true, but by what evidence do you support that statement? (By the way, the structure and personnel of our athletic support staff have improved dramatically over the past couple of years. So finally, with a good men's basketball coach in place, the season ticket sales should carry over well from football and begin to really pick-up at LU.)

That's what the ticket office personnel have said. Kisseleva is what I was looking for.

Hate to break this to ya buddy, but Winthrop was only Big South good with Wooten, Lewis ect. They were actually NCAA good with Bradshaw and Martin --- and yes, they will not be easily replaced and Marshall will not be so easily replaced either. There is still a trace of the Marshall era this season with the senior backcourt of Gaynor/Jenkins, which should position WU on top of the Big South this year, but nothing significant on the national scene -- that's all in the past.

As far as the LU's women's program goes, they were only Big South good for a number of years, but Sweet-16 good, when Katie Feenstra was here. Most of us understand that players like that don't come around every year. In fact how many 6-8 athletic women actually exist in this world?

It seems to me that I read somewhere that HPU was picked No.1 in the conference and I don't care how many verbal commits that WU gets the recruiting class at HPU is as good or better than they will have when finished. The WU spin is just what it is, "BS".
