Mitchell Commission Plans to Name Players

Since former Senator George Mitchell launched his investigation into baseball's steroid past 18 months ago, the big questions have been whether the final report would name names, and how many names would be named, and how important the names would be.

Some officials came away from a 30-team Major League Baseball conference call held mid-day Friday with the understanding that the forthcoming Mitchell report would include many names; names which have so far not been disclosed publicly; and the names of well-known players.

According to those familiar with the conference call, Tom Carlucci, a lawyer for MLB, told the team representatives on the conference call that the report is going to be "salacious."

Said one source familiar with what was said on the conference call, "This is going to be enormous ... it's going to be a huge story when these names come out."

Carlucci, part of the San Francisco-based firm of Foley and Lardner, indicated on the call, according to sources, that the report would come down sometime between the conclusion of the World Series and the beginning of the new year.

MLB vice president Rob Manfred downplayed the significance of what was said on the call, saying that Carlucci is not even in a position to know specifically what has been generated by the Mitchell investigation. What Carlucci told the clubs, Manfred said, was that for their planning purposes, they should assume that the number of players who will be named will be "more than a handful."

"No one except Senator Mitchell's people know for sure whether there's going to be names named and how many names are involved and who those names are," Manfred said.

Mitchell issued a statement that did not go into specifics.

"The investigation has not been completed, and no decisions have been made about any aspect of the report," he said......

I try to follow this stuff pretty close...here's my take


Bonds is in DEEEP doo doo....and Mitchell doesnt even have to be the one to do it. The Fed's have been working on this Balco case for a while now, yet up until this point they have focused ALL of their attention to Jones simply b/c she was so close by testing positive and then the 2nd sample would come back clean so they could never get her...now look what they've done to her...she's crying on the courthouse steps saying everything she's professed up until this point has been a lie.....now ALL of that same force will be headed to Bonds....


Dont get it twisted, baseball is still the good ole boy network and there is a reason why San Fran will not have Bonds back next year...he put up decent numbers (he cant really play OF but 3 or 4 days a week) they know what's about to come down on him and they want to distant themselves from him as much as they can in the next 6 months

I'm not sure that I would go with a greater %, but more likely on par with the hitters. I've had players whisper to me & other journalists that they can't believe pitchers are getting a pass in this discussion. Yes I suspect many of the top pitchers in the league are juicing in some regard.

Pitchers use them to recover from injury. When you throw as much as they do, you're going to have arm soreness, etc. The steroids/whatever help to get over that soreness and keep you healthy.

I agree to a certain point...baseball in general is a grind like none other...your body is in constant pain


I agree with Sly...I think there are just as many of each...the main reason I believe there are not as many pitchers is b/c muscle can effect hitting, although pitching your relying on tendons which steroids cannot effect.


A reason you'll see some pitchers that shy away from steroid use is b/c their muscles will grow so fast yet their tendons stay the same which increases your chances to get hurt by about 1000%

hence the increased injury rate among all baseball players, unlike other sports (football, basketball, etc) baseball is one of the few sports that rely on tendons almost more than strength thats why the injury rates are higher

Muscle may not be vital for the arm, but the power of the leg drive (think muscle) is very important.

of course, although again it does put more strain on the tendons which is why some are hesitant...


Most pitchers will do a mild form...they wont stack the steroids while your hitters such as bonds, sosa and others will stack sometimes as many as 4 different types at a time. The pitchers will do that simply to help their body recover while you wouldnt see much muscle gain...even someone as tall and lanky as Kris Benson has been speculated...just not publicly

Report: Mitchell gets documentation from Radomski about steroids clients

NEW YORK -- Baseball investigator George Mitchell has received an extensive paper trail documenting performance-enhancing drugs sent to players by former New York Mets clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski, a person familiar with the probe said Monday.

Among the documents Mitchell and his staff have obtained are invoices detailing the substances sent to players, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because Mitchell hasn't authorized details to be made public.

Mitchell likely will issue his report on steroids in baseball by the end of the year, lawyer Thomas Carlucci said during a conference call with club officials Friday. Carlucci told them they should assume the report will name names.

Radomski pleaded guilty in April to distributing steroids to major league players from 1995-2005 and laundering money, and he was required as part of a plea agreement to cooperate with Mitchell, a former Senate Majority Leader who is a director of the Boston Red Sox.

An affidavit signed by IRS special agent Jeff Novitzky in December 2005 contains the names of players Radomski dealt with, but the names were blacked out when a copy of the affidavit was unsealed in April. Scott Schools, the U.S. Attorney in San Francisco, said then that Radomski admitted providing steroids, human growth hormone, amphetamines and other substances to "dozens of current and former Major League Baseball players and associates."

McCain said it was a mistake not to include Barry Bonds in the March 2005 hearing that featured Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro.

"I think that maybe in retrospect that it probably would have been a good idea to do so, but that decision was made over in the House of Representatives," he said.

McCain said he considers Hank Aaron the home run king, even though Bonds has 762 homers, seven more than Aaron's total.

"Maybe an asterisk should be after Mr. Bonds' name," McCain said. "I'm not trying to impose it. I'm not telling Bud Selig to do it. I'm just saying that happens to be my personal opinion."

I hope this report or whatever it is drills as many as possible. I think over 60% of the league is on roids. I've said it on here before but one of my good friends worked for the Triple AAA team of the White Sox when Crede, Rowand, and that generation was there. She said that just about all those guys were doing at least 3 cycles over the summer. The one she mentioned that didn't was Garland. I don't think pitchers use it as much, but I'm sure there are some.

One of my good friends just got added to the list for buying $19,000 worth of HGH from the same place as Paul Byrd...I've spoke to him about it before because of concerns with weight fluctuation but I never wanted it to turn out like this though...

there is a guy here at work that has an inlaw that is like an assistant trainer for the WS.....from things i've heard, crede and rowand were on the juice in AAA...

apprently though they stopped, but the rumor is that crede has been on HGH to help recover from injuries...

the only reason it would be hard for me to believe that they stopped after AAA is b/c the testing in AAA was 10000 times harder than the MLB at that time...I really cant fault people using it for injuries, this stuff is out there because when used for the right causes it actually helps and is safe and can be prescribed

yeah i have this huge cubs fan at work....he is even bigger than me....when it came out that ankiel did hgh he was so excited....but i explained at how he used it....to recover, it was prescribed, mlb banned it, he stopped using it.....he still doesn't believe that story...
