INDIANAPOLIS -- Cursing or venturing onto the court could draw college basketball coaches a quick technical foul this season.

The NCAA is making bench decorum a point of emphasis for 2007-08 and warns coaches to expect a whistle without warning for a variety of unsportsmanlike actions.

Referees who are consistent in enforcing the rules will be rewarded.

"The bench decorum rules, which include staying in the prescribed coaching box, have been interpreted in various ways for some time," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, the president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, said Thursday. "This initiative for strengthened, consistent enforcement has significant ramifications. Coaches and game officials who do not strictly adhere to the rules will be penalized."

The actions that can draw a technical include disrespectfully addressing an official or attempting to influence an official's decision, using abusive or profane language, taunting an opponent, inciting undesirable crowd reactions and coming onto the court without permission of an official to attend to an injured player.

seriously, I'm putting the over/under on number of games he's ejected from at 3. Same with Calhoun. I don't think I've ever seen him in the coaching box. I've seen him literally on the opposite side of the court talking to his PG at the 3pt line in the middle of a game.

You should hear Calhoun at practice. My step-father-in-law works at UCONN & has a lot of "personal" contact with him. He refuses to cheer for UCONN because of Calhoun. Me, I don't have anything against the guy. I know coaches do it & Roy is not above this criticism. With Calhoun, I don't think he'll get called for language. He seems to keep that under control while on TV, from what I have seen.

I'll be surprised if Marshall gets ejected from more than 1. He's mellowed a lot over the years, 5 years ago, with this rule, he's probably out every game. But I rarely saw him go off the last few seasons. He's always good for one a year though.

The best T he ever got was actually when he wasn't storming around. During a High Point game the officials were calling everything. He kept berating the official telling him he was turning it into a free throw shooting contest, I mean, probably 35-40 times, and loud, and angry. Finally the ref got tired of it and told him the next time he said it, he was getting teched. So another foul is called, and the ref looks over at Marshall, and Marshall prances along the sideline saying in a high pitched voice while mimicking taking a free throw "Free throw shooting contest, free throw shooting contest." It was hilarious. The ref shook his head in amusement and then teched him up.

Seriously, that was a good one on RD. If you can't laugh at that one then maybe YOU are the one taking it too seriously!

As for the new rule, the word is there is now a ZERO tolerance policy for coaches. So GM's foot stomping WILL be a "T" as will the "double windshield wiper" motion a lot of coaches have when they sit down, don't like the call then wave their arms at you. "T"! It should be interesting early in the year as that rule will be SUPER enforced to send a message.

There are actually a number of great coaches who frown on profanity. Lute Olsen is one of them. I've heard Coach K even curses during speaking engagements. I guess its that polish background. Coach K was a speaker for one of John Maxwell's multicast seminars. I wonder if he kept it clean. I know a lot of churches held those seminars.

You are correct about Coach K...he curses ALOT...I go to a few games a year and the seats are pretty good, I have to move my legs (I'm at the end of a row) to let the guys from one end of the bench to the other....so I hear everything he's saying....wow
