TRZ ruined a five song demo some friends of mine recorded there. Their singer's voice was my favorite ever, and he came out of there sounding like a unicorn with a hangover. (That's the only way I can explain it.) On top of that, TRZ actually lost some vocal tracks and wouldn't give them more time in the studio to re-record them without charging more. So they had to put it out with missing vocals in a section of one song.

Yup.

Disclaimer: I co-owned and operated a competing studio for a few years. It was started as a direct result of a lot of our friends having bad experiences at the two existing studios in town. We shutdown because musicians (in general) are about the most reliable people on Earth to do business with. Getting paid was like pulling teeth.

Didn't want to side-step your question. While I was never in a full-time band with any of these bands I'm about to show you, I was very good friends with them and played with them during practices from time to time over the course of a few years. We had all talked about doing different things but never did.

Other Side Of Fear (OSF)
Three Stars Left

The last song on the Three Stars Left site is kind of like what your guys are going through: cheap demo with bad vocals.

Just cause I got into the mood to look up all of the old bands I was friends with and hung out with on a regular basis:

The Capitol (three guys from OSF and a few others)
Monday In London (went to high school with two of em, was a little younger than them though)
Torrie's A Shaker (two from OSF, one from Generic Sam)
Team Edgar (all former members of OSF, mainly a joke to make fun of hardcore bands)

That was my life through high school and my freshman year in college.

Some other chick fronted bands that, if they wanted to, they could somewhat "model" their vocals after:

Paramore is awesome. I don't care what anyone says, if they laugh at me, or whatever, but Paramore is very good.

Flyleaf isn't bad at all with the chick singer.

The Forecast has a guy singing mainly but they have a girl who does VERY good complementary vocals.

The same could be said for Straylight Run.

There was a band out of Greensboro a few years back (probably 5-6 years ago) that had a chick lead singer that was very good. They'd been around for a while when I first heard about them. The singer went to UNC. Scorcho, you have any clue who I'm talking about?

By that description, no, I don't think I do. What kind of music did they play?

It was a Paramore type sound. They may have been called "Evermore" or something like that.

Agreed in general on chick singers.

This is my dirty little secret too. I actually haven't heard too much of them, but from what I've heard, I like. And I do care if people laugh at me. I'm completely embarrassed.

I was embarrassed at first, but I've embraced it.

SJ made fun of me for listening to Paramore months ago. Then he backtracked and confessed he liked them when he was "in the right mood".

There are a lot of bad female vocalists out there. A lot. However, I've found that when there are good ones, they're usually my favorites. They don't even necessarily have to have perfect vocals if they fit the music, have an appropriate stage presence and that's especially true if they also play an instrument.

To clarify, that was before the new cd came out wasn't it?

I wasn't a huge fan of the old one. The new one is great.

See, I thought I was the only one. I could listen to Plumb (I forget her real name) and Amy Lee singing the Yellow Pages.

Actually, the new one was a fresh release at that time. You probably hadn't heard it.

I just watched them on last night's ep of Conan. They play really well live.

I think when done right it's great. That's why I like The Forecast and Staylight Run.

Also, whoever the chick that sings in Short Stories With Tragic Endings by From Autumn To Ashes is awesome.

So what you're saying is you wanted everyone to love them and not give any criticism. Anyone that actually knows me knows that music is the one thing I'm passionate about. I've only been playing for 11 years and all. I gave my opinion and you were offended because I didn't like it.

I just thought I'd mention a band I thought was cool, I didn't think the second comment would be someone saying they didn't even let the song play for more than 20 seconds but it stunk!

I'm not going to listen to something that annoys me. I said the music was solid but I had to cut it off because the vocals were bad. I'm not going to listen to something that isn't good simply because the song isn't over. I've gotten entire cd's and stopped listening after a song and a half because it was horrible.
