Scouting report for LU
Our players and their areas of specialty:
Clay Finley, J.D. (captain, senior government major from Sparta, IL)--law, government, history, & sports. Clay brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team. In his third year on the team, Clay is adept at not buzzing in on toss-ups until he's 100% sure of the answer. His knowledge in science is very under-rated.
Jeff Taylor (grad student in Education from Rocky Mount, VA)--sports, history, health, & medicine. Strength in particular in sports, but also quick on the trigger in toss-up rounds. Must be careful not to be too trigger happy, which can cost the team -5 points for an incorrect response.
Kelly Hamren (senior English major from Roanoke, VA)--literature. Up from last year's JV team, Kelly has a proverbial plethora of information on all aspects of literary trivia...not to mention a calming influence on the males on the team.
Richard North (English major, graduate student, Faber, VA)--literature, music, sports. If it is pop-culture and music, then Richard is your man. Expect him and Taylor to confer on most sports-related bonus questions.
Lucy Nickerson (alternate, psychology major). Lucy provides needed depth to the team, possessing a wide range of knowledge in many subjects.
Coaches
The team is especially blessed to have Drs. Jim Nutter and Emily Heady to provide leadership and mentoring to the LU team.
Dr. Heady is a College Quiz Bowl veteran. The lone female on her squad, Dr. Heady was a member of the College Bowl Team at The Ohio State University from 1995-1998 and competed at the conference, regional, and national levels. After a six-year break from the world of competitive academics, Dr. Heady began working with the LU team. In their first tournament ever, the newly appointed squad finished first in the Big South, going undefeated in eight games.
Dr. Nutter is the Director of the Honors program and co-coach along with Dr. Heady. As a member the Department of English and Modern Languages, Dr. Nutter currently teaches courses in American Literature as well as in the Modern Novel and American Novel. He received his doctorate in English from the University of Mississippi; he also earned an M.Ed. from the University of Virginia with a specialization in Gifted Education. A professor at Liberty since 1985 and Honors Director since 1995, he previously taught at Marshall University where he received his master's degree. Under his tutelage, the LU Quiz Bowl team has compiled a two year Big South record of 14-1 in winning consecutive conference titles.
