New England was actually the first section of the US to talk about secession, back before the War of 1812, so the attitude has always been there. Any time people think that their voice isn't being heard, they're going to start mumbling about starting their own country.

Not surprising that polar opposites of the political spectrum are talking about it, either. The majority is going more centrist, so the wings are going to feel marginalized. There's been a movement for Christians to move to South Carolina and start their own country for a few years now.

There's too much federally controlled infrastructure in most states for it to be economically feasible to secede. Highways, bridges, etc. would be a problem for most states to maintain.

I wouldn't mind if Northern Virginia and/or Danville left.

The town next to mine growing up, Glastonbury CT, has had secession talks for years and years, which would be very odd. They are not very big, and totally landlocked, but wealthy. If that every happened we should either make them buy their highways or tear them out.

And by the way, the article makes it seem like New Englanders hate the South and are mortal enemies. There's really no hatred, we could really care less.

The best thing to ever happen to VA was when the western counties left in the 1860's...
...and I would LOVE to see NOVA bail.

For the record, the Texas references in the Yahoo story are to a group of nutcases in West Texas who claim the Republic of Texas still exists since proper protocol was not used in joining the union a century and a half ago.

When that happened UVa was no longer in the geographical center of the state, like Mr. Jefferson had intended it. Study

Northwestern Florida (Gulf Coast/panhandle area) has always wanted to leave Florida. In fact, there was a HUGE stink a few years ago when the panhandle was inadvertantly left off a state-produced map.

The region has always had more in common with Alabama (for better or for worse).
