From the fishwrap:
Falwell: Liberty University not buying River Ridge mall

By Christa Desrets

Persistent rumors that River Ridge mall will be sold or donated to Liberty University are untrue, LU Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said Wednesday.

“It’s just not in the cards, not that I can see anyway,” Falwell said. “We’ve not had any conversations with the owners of the mall about the property, except about the possibility of leasing some parking spaces.”

Yesterday there was a post from everyone's favorite N&A commenter "damalama" stating that we were "crooked" for acquiring land, leveraging our tax exempt status and then selling it for a profit. Apparently he/she doesn't realize that we're a non-profit organization and no one at LU is getting rich. Or that, occasionally, it takes money to run a university. The post is gone now, but I just wanted to make sure it didn't get away without being noted. I love the "crooked" conspiracies about LU in Lynchburg.

You can bet that every N&A article having anything to do with TRBC or LU will have a comment from them on it.

Which makes it all the more entertaining that we slowly chip away at every large piece of real estate. We may not be trying to get this now, but i think is basically only a matter of time.... :nod

The sad thing is, the anti-LU/TRBC/Falwell/religion comments come up no matter what the article or letter is about.

And if you actually follow the history of the town and TRBC, that church has owned many more properties in the past than it does now, and very significant properties. This is nothing new what the church and Liberty are doing, it's just the town, and country in general, have gotten much crazier.

Really that is the last domino to acquire for Liberty to really boom. If they got River Ridge Mall, it would truly be Jerryland down there.

If we got it, what would they do with it? They really don't need classroom space. With some work you could probably create a new basketball/multipurpose facility that could seat 20,000. I guess you could make it a HUGE housing facility as well and dump all the circle dorms. Make one side girls and on the far side boys. Than put a HUGE cafeteria in the middle (splitting the sides up), but serving lunch there may be difficult with it being so far away from the classrooms.

The one thing that I think still makes Liberty look pretty sloppy (architecture wise) is the lack of space on campus. Everything is WAY too crowded. Very few green places. Very small roads, parking, etc. I would love for them to dump all the circle "temporary dorms" and replace them with nothing. If they did build a new dome/multipurpose facility at River Ridge, I would love to see them bulldoze the Vines center and replace it with parking (or a parking structure). Then you dump the front parking in Demoss and build an extra two lanes of road all the way around the back of campus.

If we acquire a great amount of land, they really need to look for ways of spacing the campus out. It would make our campus look and feel so much better!

I think I would rather them use the newly acquired plaza for the medical school because of its close proximity to the hospital. Now if they want to begin building a hospital on the River Ridge land, this would be the ideal place to start with the medical school and hope the money comes in to build a full fledged hospital in future years.

isn't is funny that an article about LU denying any acquisition of the mall sparks debate about what we should do with it when we get it?

It's funny and evil. Evil and crooked. Because buying and selling land is crooked. Especially if you're a non-profit organization.

can't replace vines witha parking lot. it is in a huge ravine. that is why vines fits there so perfect

Yeah, it is always easier said than done, but I bet you could build a parking structure in that ravine and it would be pretty cool to have 4-5 or more levels of underground parking (the top floor would be level with the road). You could make the entrance and exits where the beginning of the circle drive around the dorms begins (obviously after they expand the road). No one could park there without a pass.

Of course you talk about the perfect campus make out spot!!

I believe several hints by Jerry Jr. indicate we will eventually have the mall "Shopping Centers have a finite lifespan...the mall still has a few years left," and that it will "make a good civic center."

We may not be talking to anyone right now, but it definitely seems to be on the shopping list.
