This is just discussion fodder for those music snobs and people who like to argue. It harkens back to the days of Sabbath v. Zeppelin, or GnR v. Metallica. Basically, what's your take on which band/performer you think has or had a greater place on the musical landscape. Take two contendors of seemingly equal value and let the discussion begin. It's not a "which band could beat up the other", of course you could always take that into consideration in determining your criteria. This may end up being gay, but it's a good way for inconsequential debate. If you want to pick up a couple other contenders, start a new thread about them.

Why is Alice in Chains anyway? What'd she do?

Although I like both, Alice in Chains was the band I prefer. Too bad Layne Staley (I think that was his name) died. Of course if he had lived, they probably would have gone the same route as STP or Soundgarden....down the toilet.

Same here. I've always thought that tool was pretty overrated. Although they did have that pretty sweet claymation video.

ooo this one is hard....great matchup...

musically, i'm going to give it to tool. danny carey and adam jones are phenominal at their crafts and maynard has one of the best voices around....

while i dont' think they are overrated i do think they were hyped for the wrong reasons...another thing i like about tool is that lateralus is better than aenima....which i didnt' think would ever be possible....10,000 days was ok and had a few great songs on it...

Alice in chains was awesome. i think i'd of given them the nod if staley had been around longer...cantrelll is great (his solo stuff is awesome)...

i think i give the nod to Tool as that is what i probably listen to the most between the two these days....i'm able to get my seattle grunge fill elsewhere if needed but with Tool, its them or its nothing...

however, i'm certain, this crowd is filled with more AIC lovers than tool fans...

Not a huge fan of either band, but I'd give it to Tool for technical ability and because they at least have one song that I like. (Schism)

Velvet Revolver?

If that's who you mean, let's be clear that Weiland definitely did NOT start that band. He was the last member to be added. The band was started by three former members of GNR (Slash, Duff and Matt Sorum). They added guitarist Dave Kushner (from Suicidal Tendencies) and looked for a singer for a long time before settling on Weiland.

They had so much potential, but I've been tremendously disappointed by almost everything they've done so far.

Nothing against Tool but Alice in Chains made 'Jar of Flies' (speaking of claymation videos). They win, hands down. Staley's voice was unbelievable and there hasn't been anyone since whose sound is anything close to them. "I Stay Away" is now stuck in my head.

Nickleback, Creed, etc. are/were all some of the worst rock bands ever.

They're all "wish I had Eddie Vedder's voice" bands. Since I never liked Vedder's voice, I certainly don't like poor imitations of it.

i asked another aficianado here at work..

he said tool for the main reason i too said it...

if he wants top notch grunge there are 5 or so viable bands that he can get it from....if he wants ...errr tool type music.....you go with Tool. end of discussion....

also most musicians that listen to both will more than likely say tool, in my mind....because of the technical aspect of it...

nickleback falls so far below Creed its not even funny...Creed was annoying, but there were some good things written (It just ended up turning out to sound like crap because of scott stapp)...Nickleback songs are about the stupidest things and they are just flat out bad...I wish they would go back to Canada

As much as I respect Tool's musical ability, I have to go with Alice In Chains on this one. Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell harmonized as well as anybody I can remember in a hard rock band. Good thread, keep these coming.

I didn't bother reading the responses other than LEFTIE's (above) but if you disagree with

ALICE IN CHAINS

you are dead wrong and should have your ears cut off.

Hmm, I figured a Tool like you would have gone the other way.
