LU Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. announces land acquisition
September 7, 2007

by Ron Brown
Liberty Journal

An Arizona real estate development firm has agreed to donate Lynchburg’s The Plaza shopping center to Liberty University, Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said Friday.

Falwell’s announcement came during convocation at LU’s Vines Center.

“Our target closing date is Sept. 30,” Falwell Jr. said.

The Plaza’s 42-acre site and its 467,000 square feet of buildings have an assessed tax value of $11.7 million. The shopping center’s current owner, Sandor Development Co. of Scottsdale, Ariz., has signed the agreement formalizing the donation.

I admit I didn't see this coming. What will we do with this property? Its far enough away from the mountain to generate some fun speculation.

I would NOT want to place a med school in that part of town. I suspect a lot of the auxiliary services which are not necessary to on-campus life (like DLP) might be relocated there...but that is a sizable tract of land, to say the least.
I suggest the English/Lit. Department would be a good fit

Let's be serious now. That place has had a bulldozer coming for a long time. Let's put it out of it's misery.

Great thought..and one I obviously had not thought of. I'm just not a big fan of that part of town...but a Med School could do wonders for cleaning it up. Besides, I don't think MCV is in the best part of Richmond.

a med school could enchance the area and possibly investors would buy some of the older homes and renovate them. plus a med school would bring other amenities closer to that part of town.

Jerry.Jr just said that they are going to move offices over there and that will help out with the parking problem...

It will be DLP Offices for the most part, I believe. Perhaps some admissions counselors will be stationed there, as well.

I think we will be buying the River Ridge Mall once the open air mall opens....that place will need to sell to someone

Fumble, you really have missed your calling: you should do stand up comedy. Too bad they couldn't have thrown in Miller Park. We can always use more ball fields and another swimming pool.

right off of Memorial Ave behind the library. Actually right accross the street from EC Glass. You may know it as that run down place where the "other" movie theatre is.

that "other" movie theatre is so much nicer then the mall theatre (not saying much), but it is...

This is an interesting development. There is currently a church in the Plaza that meets in the old J.Crew Clearance Store location. The place has been completely renovated on the inside and the building also hosts a late-night coffee shop/gathering place for 20 and 30-somethings during the school year. I wonder what will become of all that.

Miller Park...good thought. The gang activity would change to those Hawthorne toting hoodlums against the Poe thugs. What a sight that would be, but alas...All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.

I wondered about that church as well. That's a situation that will require a great deal of wisdom and tact, which junior seems to exhibit in great quantities.
