so i was sitting in the dell (the big grassy common area in the middle of the LC campus) eating some food with friends today and some kids who calimed to be from Liberty started preaching to me right in the middle of my peaceful lunch. so my question is: why do Liberty kids have to invade other campuses trying to convert people?

I will admit that some can be rather forthcoming...borderline abrasive. I think I relayed stories of being up here when I was working MBB at UNCA...one of our players gets hurt...and some well meaning "Liberty kid" comes down to the bench and starts praying for him...while I'm trying to do the eval.

Sorry, but I'm failing to see anything wrong with what they're doing. And to call them idiots and act embarrassed of them is kind of embarrassing in itself.

1.) college campuses are full of kids searching for happiness. getting plastered, waking up, throwing up, then doing it all over again eventually gets old.

2.) we live in such a shallow world. even as Christians we live shallow lives. we know what is right, what we should be doing, and what's important. we choose to focus our entire lives on work, school, etc. i think college students sharing the Gospel on other campuses is just one step closer to a drastic change towards a world living to worship... which is our command.

Im in the same boat alumnus most of us "Christ followers" dont have the guts to even go up to someone and ask them about their faith, so to hear that people are doing it is great. Now Im sure there are people who come off a bit edgy but how many of us here need a kick in the pants sometimes? Honestly Im proud of those people who can go to LC and share their faith. BTW shuck have you seen a bald headed fellow from LU occasionally witnessing?

I guess you'll just have to be embarrassed of me, then. I think confrontational evangelism like this does more harm that good (as evidenced by shukcb04's original post). When people are eating and minding their own business, if you come up to them and start talking about Jesus, you may as well be pitching Quixtar. It's very rare that people listen.

I'm not saying it shouldn't be done at all, but I do think it should be done with a A LOT more tact than it's usually done by most of the students I've had experiences with. Not only that, but I think there are much more effective and less offensive ways to share your faith.

But hey, obviously we disagree, and I'm okay with that. Like I said, I'm just not that guy.

i kinda lean with scorcho on this. say an athiest LC student came over to LU and started preaching his beliefs? i think some at LU would have the same thoughts shuk had. as christians we are supposed to witness, but i think it should be done more through actions.

I seem to recall some guy named Paul (formerly saul) that kept getting beaten, stoned, jailed, thrown out of town for sharing his faith.
I know, different time, different culture.......

The Gospel will always cause offense.

Paul declared he was not ashamed of the Gospel - it is the way of a saving relationship with Christ.

I do not support whackos that jump in your face and tell you that you and your children are going to hell.
I do support relationship evangelism.

End of sermon - off to church!

i equate what these liberty kids did to the jehova's witnesses that go door-to-door all the time. no one really likes it and no one really listens. it's a waste of time as far as i'm concerned. it would make me not want to convert to Christianity and would make me find Christianity to be unappealing, which is self-defeating the purpose of approaching the people. i'd rather convert because I want to, not because a bunch of people told me to. In my opinion, a conversion based out of pressure and a sense of obligation is pretty dang close to meaningless because you aren't doing it because you want to, you are doing it because everyone else wants you to.

Also, if you are ever going to come up to me and preach to me and tell me i believe the wrong things, you better ask me what my dang beliefs are first before running your mouth. If it wasn't for the fact that I wanted to avoid a conflict, I probably would have thrown every single atheist and agnostic argument in front of these fellows' faces and see how long it took them to go running off with tears flowing down their face.

I don't go up to you preaching about my faith and how your beliefs are wrong, so don't do it to me.

So my question is, after reading what I just said, what good did these guys ever do in spreading the Gospel? brcause to me it sounds like they did a heck of a lot more harm to it than there would have been had they kept their mouth shut.

we live in a different kind of world today....people do not respond to random people talking to them about religion...its the way it is...its a very relationship oriented society...we should focus on relationships first in my opinion...

I agree with you...to an extent...shukcb04. Even Paul, in his journeys, tried to REASON and present logical arguments for the Gospel. However, it was when he got to Rome, it was interpreted as a front to the established "state religion." I think the "over-zealous" kind believe in their hearts that is what they are called to do. Even if they touch one or two souls, it is worth it. Sure, in today's time, it may well turn off more...but perhaps, just perhaps, they plant a seed.

If you truly believed someone driving a car was about to go off a cliff, wouldnt you try to warn them?

Bad analogy I know, but the Bible, which we hold to be true, implies that someone whose faith does not involve Christ's sacrificial death will not be spending life after death with God. Why shouldnt we say something to you if we believe that?
If we believe youre going somewhere you probably dont want to go how can we not say anything?

I dont know what you believe but you mentioned agnosticism/athesim - If it doesnt matter what any of us believes why make a big deal about it? That makes sense.

Off different quote - Relationships?
Who is the hardest person to normally witness to? The one youre closest to.

Now it DOESNT mean preach and go away and their saved great dotdotdot. We are commanded to what make disciples, not converts. It is probably not good to just witness to someone who youve never met, and then afterwards never see them again. If we care we will invest our time in other people. But not too many of us are actually able to have a relationship with someone and step up at the same time.

No one cares about how much you know until they know how much you care. Christ didn't call us to condemn but to share the truth in love.

Yes, I agree. Confrontational evangelism tends to turn off almost everyone and makes most unbelievers think Christians are weirdos and something they don't want to have any part of.

my faith is not important to the discussion of why Liberty kids unwelcomingly invade other places to preace.

His beliefs have nothing to do with this conversation. He is talking about overbearing Liberty kids who will interrupt whatever you're doing in a very rude manner and preach at you until they're done with you. It's the worst possible way to witness but yet some of these kids do it on a regular basis. They're abrasive, rude, and don't care that they're giving off the worst possible vibe about Christianity.
