I got Dish Network this summer, but never got the "free" DVR as an option. Now, I find I can't record games & programs on my old VCR, so I'm thinking I should have gotten the DVR instead. Any thoughts on renting a DVR from Dish Network vs. purchasing a Tivo unit from Best Buy or somewhere?

Well either way you'll be "renting" with Tivo you'll have to "rent" the service from them but own the box or just rent the box from Dish...I personally like the DVR from Directv the best...maybe Tivo will be your best option though

The advantage to renting a DVR is that if the device stops working properly you can get it replaced easily. I've traded DVRs in at least twice with my cable company. With TiVo, you own the box. If something happens outside of warranty, repairs and replacement are coming out of your pocket.
