Anyone know what's going on over there? 460 is covered up with State and local police, shotguns and semi-auto rifles out. They're all looking over the side of the road, at the back of Movies 10

They had prisoners out working on the side of the road earlier today. Chances are, one tried to get away.

so me and bryson road up there. according to a reporter for channel 10, they thought there was a kidnapper from VA beach in the extended stay.
and supposedly there were snipers and helicopters, but the guy wasn't there.

he's probably on campus somewhere or something

That is what we expect out or our campus students. Good reporting!

Yea, they had gone to the Extended Stay to serve a warrant for a kidnapper in VA Beach, and then something about a possible hostage situation, or something along those lines. They were talking about it at practice.

All of this on campus, and not a word about it to the students on campus to be careful. Kinda scary in my opinion.

this is true jon, they definitly thought there was some danger if they had snipers and helicopters and news crews there.
of course, i'm not sure what good it would have done to let students know. they would just get really paranoid, and then there would be people like me who would go over there to check the situation out.. it would probably cause more problems then it would solve.

you're right...but that is probably what they thought at Tech when all the stuff went on before the big shootout...I know that is taking it to the extreme...but its the kind of world we live in today

I'm not saying put the place on lock-down. I'm saying a simple e-mail or flash page warning, "Possible criminal situation in the area around campus. There's no immediate danger, but please be on the look out and take extra precautions while out on campus." Maybe not those exact words, there are people with degrees who do this stuff for a living. Just something letting us know.

you're very right....just something...I would've had no idea if I hadn't read on here....

Just seems odd there was no warning after all the talk about trying to be more safe and such

A possible kidnapper in the area, and we've got girls, very pretty ones at that, walking to LaHaye to workout, or just walking around campus. I'm sure they'd feel a lot more safe and take a lot more precautions if they knew.

Edit:

If this had happened downtown or something, I wouldn't think of it as a problem. This happened pretty much on campus though.

so basically there could very well be a kidnapper running across campus, and Liberty officials haven't informed any of the students whatsoever? guess they have short memories and forgot what happened at Va Tech already. if i was a parent on a kid going to LU and found out about this, somebody's butt would be catching hell right now.

No no no, it's not that bad. The police had it under control and handled it and things are fine now. However, criminals are stupid. He could've tried to make a break for it, picked an LU kid up and tried to hold him/her hostage or something. We're fine now.

it was right beside campus, but they thought he was in a room. there was no way he couldve gotten by the police onto campus.
don't get me wrong, i definitly think students should have been notified, but i'm just saying students weren't in much danger

...except he's still out there. And he's in his early twenties. And he was last seen near a college campus.

Wherever could he go to blend in?

i dont know if this is them, but they were installing a bunch of things on light poles around campus that look similar to sirens, could be.

And about the parents of students going to liberty feeling safe about their children, i still am seeing parents walking around with their kids, so at least not all of them have reason to worry yet. At this point, if your a parent, and your still here, you are ruining your kids life.

They are in the process of installing a major component of the campus wide alert system TODAY (during convo, in fact). There was even an N&A article this summer (posted here, I believe) about what we're doing in light of the VT tragedy this summer. The pieces are being put in place to make sure everyone on campus can be alerted almost instantaneously through one of several methods.

The local news didn't even cover it until this morning, so I'm not entirely certain that the police made anyone aware of the situation until they were already out there with guns drawn.

Manhunt - Delmartis Bryant
Tuesday August 21, 2007 11:51pm Reporter: Maria Black Posted By: Webteam

Lynchburg, VA - The area around Liberty University and Route 460 swarmed with police officers Tuesday and it had nothing to do with the storm. A manhunt sent police into the woods and up into the air searching for a suspected kidnapper.

As a chopper circled the sky above, Lynchburg police and other law enforcement combed the ground around Candler's Mountain. It all started around 5:20 on Tuesday evening when deputies tried to serve a warrant and the suspect took off running.
