Yeah, if you just happened to be posting about Samford just this once, I'd say I was being ridiculous. However, it's all you talk about...on a site dedicated to LU athletics. Maybe you need to start a Samford message board? I mean, one comment (or thread) once in a while is okay, but you're pretty Samford centric. It'd be like me going over to a JMU board and posting about LU with 99% of my comments. No one at JMU cares about LU unless we have an upcoming athletic matchup (and maybe not even then). We're not in the same conference. We only have a loose relation via proximity and that's about it. We're about as loosely related with Samford, and we do not care.
Well, if actually paid any attention to my posts, you would notice that i have commented on a variety of topics.

Hey, Hoops I gotta ranking comparison for ya

Aside from all the insignificant ratios that you have to suck up to in order to boost your ranking, there is one that does seem to transcend them all and does have long term staying power: acceptance rate. In other words, the actual percentage of applicants that an institution accepts in proportion to the amount that applies. The real heavies like Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Yale, and even Duke and Stanford weigh in at around a 9% acceptance rate. Which means that the truly "elite" reject about 90% of those who apply. Even a school like UVA, which is at around 45% is considered "hard to get in to."

Ok Hoops, hold on now, cause this one's gonna sting a little.

Ready? Here we go....

Did you know that samford has an 86% acceptance rate! Yes, Hoops, we're talking about THE SAMFORD. Yes samford accepts nearly 90% of all those who apply. This means that samford is a very easy school to get in to, my friend. They only reject around 200 applicants per year. That's all! A school with only 2,500 students that accepts nearly 90% of those who apply is far from superior. So, why were you so surprised that you were accepted into samford, as you indicated earlier????

LU on the other hand has a 71% acceptance rate and we're not even trying to participate in that game. In fact, we allow as many in as we are able to house.

According to the data, LU rejects a higher percentage of applicants.....hmmmm..

Could it be that our good friend hoops was among the rejected

If LU wanted to play this ranking game, then we could cut our 10,500 enrollment in half, ignore all other evaluation methods and accept only those with very high SAT's, and comply with a bunch of annoying procedures, and we'd have a sparkling newsweek ranking. But this is not our mission. LU is a leader that beats to its own drum. Our calling is much higher than some insignificant magazine ranking. And those associated with this institution understand that. It's a special place.

Normally, I try to have a civilized conversation, but you've really slammed my school, so I'm going to forget my normal manners.
First of all, I was NOT rejected by LU. In fact, LU called me before any other school I applied to. The other two schools I applied to Mars Hill and Samford, spent more time actually analzying my application , and I was accepted by all three colleges.
I love how you say "If LU wanted to play this ranking game"-in other words, you might as well have prefaced it with "IF WE CARED ABOUT OUR ACADEMIC REPUTATION"
You say you're a "Special place", well, you can call it whatever you want, but I can honestly tell you, the main reason I didn't choose your college was because it felt more like summer bible camp than an institution that was serious about providing a quality education. I'm not trying to sound like a wiseguy, that's just really what it came down to. That was my perception, and I'm not implying that's the same feeling of every other potential freshman who choses elsewhere, but that was the main impression it left on me.
You claim we're a "Very" easy school to get into, because you only use the facts that suit your agenda. It actually reminds me of a michael moore documentary. Unfortunately, you couldn't be further from the truth. If you read my earlier post, and actually looked at ALL the facts, you would see that we actually use something called STANDARDS. You can't just take ONE figure and apply that to the whole discussion, you have to look at the entire set of facts and #s
You obviously overlooked these numbers when you did your inquiry, you would have seen that that majority of our freshmen were in the top quarter of their class, and just under 40% were in the top tenth.
The majority of our applicants have an above average SAT or ACT score, and anybody who doesn't have a strong academic record doesn't bother applying. I had a slightly above average ACT score and was accepted on academic probation (which is probably the case for many more students- i don't have that list in front of me and neither do those publications, because that's a matter of private record.
That's why every major, accredited ranking system classifies us as more selective (u.s. news and Princeton Review) or very selective (Barrons). I'm not going to sit here and argue who has the better school, because you're honestly not worth the effort, and I know the facts. For a "special place" you sure do lack a decent amount of class. I was talking about some of our recent progress with our arena, and simply mentioned the fact that they recently attained a great ranking. If somebody came on our message board and posted that, I would have told them congrats and asked them a few more questions if I was curious about anything else. For some reason, on this board, the pharisees came crawling out of the woodworks, let by lord Paradox and tried to put their whole negative, minimizing spin on it. I don't think it's a stretch to say that if your college had recently attained such recognition, you would be happy to boast about it. In fact, it would probably be the lead post.
Paradox, Go publish your own college ranking system. Let me know how many you sell. you obviously know more than than the people who do that for a living.

Yes, you do. And then you bring up Samford in most of them. In fact, you've posted about Samford in some way, shape or form no less than 38 times on this board. You've spent at least another 20 or 30 posts arguing with our members when they complain about hearing about Samford.

My larger point is that while there is no rule against posting about other schools (or their sports) on our board, you really make me want to reconsider that. More than one person has expressed that they don't enjoy seeing it here. Many others have spent time arguing with you over what really amounts to a superiority complex. We appreciate that Samford is loosely connected with us through faith. Really, we do. However, if we want to read about what's going on there, we know where we can find such information.

Samford is superior (in your view) to LU in almost every way. We get it. Good things are happening there, too. We get it. You're welcome to stay, but please, take the competitiveness down a notch (or ten). It's just too much.

Actually, I was just having a little fun pointing out that samford has about as high as an acceptance rate as any school in the US. IT'S NEARLY 90%!!! Even LU, which completely disregards the ratings game and houses as many students as it is able fares much better at 71%. This information is a far cry from what you were saying earlier about this whole superiority thing, and all of this mumbo-jumbo about HOW HARD IT WAS TO GET IN, and how you thought that you wouldn't get in, but this special essay that you wrote somehow put you over the top

You've been subtly slamming LU with your snide little girlie remarks from post to post....

Your aspersion about bible camps doesn't carry a great deal of weight with me. I have been on numerous university campuses over the years, and even attended a few including Fordham, Virginia Commonwealth, and LU. In my estimation, LU stacks up favorably with the other two that I attended as far as academics are concerned. I'll go so far as to say that LU stands out in my overall experience because I had the opportunity to interact with students from many different regions of the US and the around the globe. That experience alone is an education in itself. Not to mention, the high proportion of quality women here. No university that I have ever been to has ever come even remotely close to LU in that respect.

For the record, i'm not implying we're superior to you in every way. The world of higher education is a complex and multi-facted one, and I'll be the first to say that your college has good spiritual life, which is something to be proud of. My only qualm is this- I've been on this board for several months, and if you look at my total post count, it's extremely low (comparatively speaking) to the average user.
This is a forum and when other users such as paradox ,completely overlook the facts I state, blindly revert back to ONE stat, and refuse to abandon their myopic view, this ceases to be a forum, and it's really more like an argument with a four-year old.
I can honestly say that it just amazes me to see how your posters react to ANY references of my school, compared to the fans from other teams on our board. (from the ovc, to so-con to Sun Belt and beyond) I'm not sure what it is, but whatever, i really don't care.To appease the masses, I will no longer refer to my school in ANY way besides sports, unless somebody asks, and save all the shamless plugs for AGS. Having said that, I expect to be treated with the same respect and logic that I grant to everybody else. I hope that's not too much to ask.

Mr. Hoops:

What facts are we overlooking?

Here is metric for the newsweek rankings:

Peer Assessment----------25%
Graduation/Retention-----25%
Faculty Resourses---------25%
Student Selectivity--------15%
Financial Resources-------10%
Alumni Giving-------------- 5%

Gotta be honest with ya Hoops, there's a great deal of subjectivity in there
Only 20% of the evaluation can be trusted to be a detatched unbiased numerical assessment.

You sure are stubborn about attacking my college.
I'm not sure where they got those numbers, because they dont' line up with any of the others. Look at our graduation rate, our financial resources are high, (according to the very bank that has financed us for decades and is behind our massive renovation) and our endowment is in the top 5% in america http://www.nacubo.org/documents/researc ... isting.pdf
But of course, your reference is Newsweek.
I've never even seen a Newsweek annual college publication, but three of the most reliable ones directly contradict all these rankings. You're also quoting one of the most unreliable sources of all major print media, the same publication that made up the story about our soldiers flushing kurans down the toilet.
Bottom line- The fact that you're actually going this length to dig for any bad info that you can find about my college is really pathetic.

Hoops, I'm sure that samford was the right fit for you.

However, just as Liberty is not for everyone, Samford is not for everyone as well.

Just as you decided against LU due to a magazine evaluation, I'll offer my reasons why I'd pass on samford if I was college hunting:

1. 80% of samford students are from only three states: Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia.
2. samford in 94% white with the highest exclusively white ratio in Alabama--not good
3. you guys are too wishy-washy about the evolution-ID debate, in my opinion.

So, there ya have it. It's not for everyone, but for some people it's a perfect fit.

Ah, actually, I meant to say, US News & World Report rather than Newsweek. So, this is the evaluation that you referred to several posts earlier. I pulled this metric off of page-79 of the 2007 edition (The one with the LU feature: "They Pray as They Go.")

Ok, i'm glad you clarified, at first, I thought you were implying that those numbers , such as 25% were RATINGS and not the gauge. Why don't you consider that a broad spectrum.?
While i'm at it, you can chew on a few more numbers
In 05, Samford tied for seventh among the 323-member institutions in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Academic Performance Ratings, which measure the academic progress and graduation rates of student-athletes. In addition to being the highest ranked Alabama institution, Samford also ranks higher than any other historically Baptist college or university and is the highest ranked institution in the 11-member Ohio Valley Conference.

Anyway, I didn't make my decision over ONE magazine ranking. That was one of several factors, and it wasn't only one source I turned to, it was from several people I prayed over my decision (as I hope every christian senior does) talked to several Samford alums who were, people in with distinguished backgrounds and very respectable careers (I.E. the principal of my high school, two lawyers, a pharmacist, etc.). To be honest, I heard more negative feedback about liberty (i.e. too intolerant, too strict, fundamentalist, etc..) in comparison to the positive feedback I heard about samford. I also didn't want to get stuck in a job that was just managment, not sports managment, so I decided to go for the journalism major at SU, and I've been a sports writer for two years now.
As for the ratio, that left out florida, which is actually where we get almost as many as Tenn (last I checked) and I know we have a decent amount of kids from Texas. As for the evolution debate, that's greek to me, because i avoided science classes like the plague. I'm curious to hear about anything you know about it.

The thing that I like most about LU is its willingness to make a stand for the truth, regardless of how unpopular the truth may be may be or how much ridicule may be associated with it. Christianity has lost its nerve to a large extent in our country, however, this is not the case with Liberty. There are many Christian colleges that will accomodate nearly every position from the political and academic concensous of the left. When it gets to that point , you have to ask the question: why even attend such a college? You'd be better off attending your state U and hook up with a campus fellowship.

Another cool thing about LU is its vision. We're moving in the direction of becoming the evangelical equivalent to Notre Dame & BYU.

Also, LU is more geographically and ehtnically diverse than many schools.

Hoops. My long lost friend! (in the 'Why doesn't this kid get his own board?' kinda way)

Didn't we already have this discussion? In reading through this thread it is funny to me how you whine about how innocently you bring up your love for your alma-mater and all of these fundamental bible-camp grads come out with brass knuckles. You're so abused around here.

For a someone with a degree in journalism you sure do miss the point of most of what you write. I've always assumed that a journalist worth their salt places himself/herself in the shoes of the reader. Yet you act as though you can't understand why Liberty alum/students would be offended by your posts that drone on about rankings. This isn't the first thread we've had on this issue. You'd think by now someone with a degree from Samford could read well enough to see a bad story when they write one. With our history in dealing with you on this topic I'm left to consider whether you are in need of a refund from Samford or a lie-detector test because you're either not the sharpest tool in the shed or you enjoy being taken out behind one. (you keep coming back)

A thought on this topic:
In higher education the people who attend "prestigious" schools amounts to (according to your figure) 3% of all higher-learning institutions. So effectively 97% of colleges and universities aren't in that tier right? Cool. I'd venture to say that those that make-up that 3% tend to be schools with a less-than-average size enrollment (3k as opposed to 10k). Assuming I'm right that would mean that of every person getting an education only 1-2% of all students even attend one of these fantastic Universities you are yapping about. Cool.

If that's the case... 98+% of people educated don't give two craps about the stuff you claim to care about. The truth is... most people looking at a college want that school to equip them to do a good job and make good money in their field. In addition to wanting to be prepped for their career choice, they wonder what kind of experience they'll have (that doesn't include factors magazines use to rank schools.)

Making it a little less general....
I'd venture to say that your peers who are covering the same stories (to your left and right in the locker room) aren't all grads from that top 3%. If I'm right, you rub shoulders with a bulk of that 98% of the populous. That being the case it must suck to know that Samford's endowment isn't helping you make more money or advance much farther than those who went to 'lesser' universities. I wonder how many 'fourth-tier' journalists do the same job that you do and are paid and respected along the same lines. In short I wonder if Samford's thirst for prestige actually benefits people all that much at the end of the day.

Samford can spend their time comparing themselves with the other little boys at the proverbial bathroom stall. In the meantime, Liberty continues to become a national player representing Christ in the realm of higher education.

A few keys I've brought up about this discussion before:

1. Samford's been around a long time... a full 130 years longer than LU. To even attempt to come on our board and chide us for the need for progress is hilarious. Our freshman class is practically larger than your entire undergrad population.

2. The racial make-up of a school in Birmingham... (a city seared into our nation's conscience with images of bombings and fire-hoses...) is as close to racist as I can see from any school proclaiming to be 'Christian'. I'd be embarrassed about this.

Racial/Ethnic Group
Fall 2006

Racial/Ethnic Group No. of Students
Aboriginal/Canadian__________3
American Indian_____________14
Asian/Pacific Islander_________58
Black/African American_______335 (7.4%)

wow, when did jesse jackson walk in? you know somebody has lost an argument when they pull the race card. Secondly, when did this become an argument about annual salaries? I was a journalism major, (focus in print) and anybody entering that field isn't in it for the money, unless they have enough connections to get into one of the MAJOR news outlets. To me, it's about the quality of my work. I get paid to watch sports and write a few stories about everything I see, and at the same time I get to meet fascinating people, including outspoken christians such as evander holyfield. If money is your main goal in life, then I question where your priorities are. (Aren't you a pastor?)

As for your taken behind the shed reference, you must have just pulled that out of your rear, because nobody has thrown down anything signifcant to refute anything i've said. Anyway, i'm done with this thread and going to bed. I'm not going to sit around and debate this any longer. It's futile.

:) That's cute. I guess I'd be forced to ignore every other point made if I didn't have a legit answer to why my prestigious school (in the middle of the deep south) had a student body almost exclusively southern-whites. Yeah... I'd probably try to hide behind words like "exclusive" and "prestigious" and "rigorous entry policies" instead of "worthless arrogance", "small" and "homogeneous" too.

So, nothing to say about:
- whether so-called-prestige translates to higher job performance or increased salary?
- a racial makeup of nearly 90% white southerners?
- 97% of American-educated students not being in a 'top-tier' school?
- the fact that University selection doesn't hinge on one set criteria for every person?
- the fact that Samford is 130 years older than LU?
- the fact that LU's objective is to become like Notre Dame and Samford's is to be like... Samford?

Ohh... you're right. I'm the one that feels like he lost a debate.

Again hoops... that's a cute one-liner... but you know that for all your boasting Samford has some big flaws and your arrogance is foolish and unwarranted.

By the way, I did look at the pictures. The arena is aesthetically pleasing from the outside but rather 'high-school' looking on the inside. Are those roll-out metal bleachers?

Well, you also failed to respond to my points, but whatever, guess money is your top priority in the grand scheme of things.....that says a lot about your upbringing. (aren't you a pastor)
i'm not sure what flaws you're referring to,(the race argument is simply ridiculous, we're not turning people away because they're black, go back and get back in line with the rest of the rainbow coalition /affirmative action/ white man's burden crowd) As for the arena, I'm not sure what you're looking at, because the lower bleachers are in the initial stages of construction. As for the aspriing notre dame comment, that's mere speculation and nothing more. Keep telling yourself that you want to be notre dame, whatever makes you feel better.....??? We're not trying to be another school, being samford has worked just fine since 1841. Not sure what else to say about that.
I honestly have nothing else to say about this issue, because it's obvious that we've come to an impasse. Goodnight everyone.

Well, Hoops, if you're thinking about settling down someday and starting a family, you're gonna have to support them finacially. Tally does have a point. Most people do go to college in order to better themselves in the marketplace.

Secondly, being the most prominantly white college in a state as notorious for race relations as Alabama is kind of a contradiction in the Christian sense. Are there no black Baptists in Birmingham, a city that is 75% black? Jesse Jackson or not, a Christian college should not have the highest proportion of white students, especially in a state such as Alabama.

If money isn't a motivating factor, give back your paycheck.

You really should do stand-up. Scripture never tells us that money is inherently bad. Its the "LOVE" of money that causes problems.

My point to you is that the vast majority of people who get a higher education do so because it increases their earning potential in a lifetime. That's not disputed. This point has nothing to do with whether I'm a Pastor or not. It has to do with the segment of the population who puts themselves through 4+ years of University level education. Therefore, the motive of the general public in attaining education is a very germane topic. While at first glance it looks cute to throw around the "I'm not in this for the money" argument, it doesn't hold water. Most people go to college because it increases their earning potential. 98% of the people who work along side you did not go to a 'top tier' school. THEREFORE it is a legit question to ask yourself if being in the top tier of schools actually also puts someone in the top-tier of earnings in their chosen field. If people go to college to earn more money and their college doesn't help them do that to a greater degree than those in other tiers... then the Return on Investment is a wash at best and a failure at worst. It's all completely relevant but I suppose its easier to ignore the issue.

As a side note... the whole "Aren't you a Pastor" thing doesn't work with me because I simply ask "Aren't you a Christian?"

I missed ya hoops! I look forward to hearing the report of how you started working for free. :)

I went to college to train for a career in journalim, and that's exactly what i'm doing. Samford was more than sufficient training for my career, and I couldn't have asked for anything more. End of story.

For the record hoops... I've never seen your income and I have no clue as to where you work. For all I know you work for Sports Illustrated or ESPN the magazine or a prestigious polo magazine. You may tell me that being ranked in the top tier of Universities really mattered for you... I don't know. It was just a question. Didn't know it'd hit a nerve.

I don't have to walk around campus to know what 4,000 whites must feel like to 350 African Americans in a city known for it's violent past with race-relations.

Sounds like you've gotten your feelings hurt. In summary please remember that most people on this board don't care about Samford or what tier you're ranked or how much all of those white people will enjoy their new basketball arena. We're glad the little vanilla school with the huge endowment has a new place to cheer on their teams.

In the meantime we'll continue educating as many of the rest of that 98% of the populous that we can cram on our campus... knowing that they will go out and impact their world for Jesus (red and yellow black and white...) :)

my feelings were never hurt, and I dont' care about what a bunch of liberty students and grads thinkg about me, but I don't appreciate inaccurate labels. .For the record, I don't write for ESPN or Sports Illustrated, I write for a weekly publication that focuses on the news around my home county, and I'm just an average, humble joe who loves a friendly debate. Unfortunately, other posters on this board crossed that line a long time ago.
