Paterno can't defend date against Chants

STATE COLLEGE - Joe Paterno loves to argue. Find an issue he'd like to discuss and the guy's a world-class de bater.

As all good arguers, he first frames the discussion around whatever points he's out to make, discards as superfluous all other issues that might be germane and will only address those he embraces.

So, when he won't seriously debate a topic, you know he can't find a leg to stand on.

Such as yesterday on Penn State football media day, when asked how it was settled upon to invite next season to Beaver Stadium a Division I-AA school called Coastal Carolina University.

Heard of them? Great baseball school. And you might've noticed the Chanticleers as the Big South rep in the NCAA men's basketball tournament -- 14 years ago. Or maybe you've passed the campus on the way to Myrtle Beach.

So, what exactly in the article was incorrect? If I were a Penn State ticketholder, I'd be ticked too.

You'll have to ask the CCU folks on that one.

So his point must be that Penn State shouldn't play a 1-AA team.

But they've done this before, I believe they played UCF when they were 1-AA.

And the tough matches against the MAC schools that they start out with a lot of years...yeah, those are much better.

Kicking a game winning fieldgoal against Toledo in the last couple of minutes, priceless. Hopefully Penn State will be able to pull this one out against Coastal.

Whatever. I went to Pitt for 2 years...I'm supposed to hate Penn State.

(I do have a picture with the Nittany Lion...State College is a nice place...don't understand why they don't widen that road into Beaver Stadium...maybe they're too worried about the shedule).

He's an Ohio State Fan thru and thru and doesn't mind taking shots at JoePa. Jones is more or a basketball writer anyway.

Yeah this guy has never had anything nice to say about JoePa and perhaps uses this as his stimulus to get people talking about his articles. Check.

I mean no disrespect to any 1-AA school but I have to side with him on this one. When you're a Penn State fan you want to see more games against Pitt, Miami, West Virginia, Notre Dame etc. You don't want to make the 3.5 hour drive to State College to see Penn State (likely) crush a team on the next division of football down, like Coastal Carolina. Liberty is doing the same thing this season with Shippensburg. Now, I don't mind because I am a Ship fan, but let's be honest. Schools will take advantage of scheduling a lower division school in expectations that it will be a chalk victory and bring in a easy crowd. Schools like Penn State clearly can take more out of this strategy as it adds another win to their season total, thus making it easier to get that all important bowl qualifier status.

my man from Souderton makes a good point.

PS: you going to any Big Red games this year? Noticed they don't play Pennridge anymore - though I may go over for CB West.
