If roundball is your blood, this is the place to discuss the Flames as they move into the Ritchie McKay era for the 2nd time.

I don't expect this thread to go too far but since we hijacked LB's thread I figured I would start this one. For me the list starts with Jeff Riber (2002-2004). This kid was as popular as any starter or star I have ever seen. The crowd would chant his name in the first half!

Brian Woodson (2003-2005). Quite simply, the addition of Blair and Dees as freshman along with Woodson in the backcourt put that team over the top and won a championship. They don't win that year without him.

Charles Richardson (1985-1989). He transfered from Spring Arbor, a small school in Michigan and he was one of the top shooters on the team that eventually became a division 1 qualifier. Former teammate of mine. He was 6-5 and a little slow on D but he made up for it with his shot. Shot 44% along with me in 1988-89 from 3. Still is listed for a few records in the 3 point department.

Jason Allison (1995-1998). One could argue that he was every bit as popular as Reebs because the crowds were bigger during his time. He developed into a decent division 1 player by the time it was all said and done due to playing every day against arguably the best backcourt combo in LU history (Marcus White-Larry Jackson). One of the best young minds in the game and is now an assistant at the Big South's own VMI.

Teddy McClain and Danny Curbison (1990-1993). Those 2 guards were a huge reason why Chris Toomer and Matt Hildebrand developed into the players they were. Neither ever saw much time as a player (although they both dressed out and traveled towards the end). They were 2 of the quickest on the ball defenders you will ever see. Ask Eric Pothoven, Brett Anthony and Jody Chapman and they will all tell you the same thing.

There are others (including myself but you guys know my resume by now). I would be interested to see who were the impact walkons during the Hankinson era when I was excommunicated from the program and wasn't around as much.

Allison. Nobody had more energy on or off the court. Also, he's the only one I got to see play....well, not play, per se...

In my short time of following the Flames, it would definitely be Riber.

First of all Chaz played in the BV (Before Vines) days, so that means he played in the D-2 era... Woodson let's be honest he was on a Falwell scholarship, now these 21st century guys who played on these sub-par teams cannot possibly count... Teddy could definitely handle but couldn't shoot! So that leaves Allison, I remember him sitting for 39 minutes and then coming in and burying a 3 and as a senior playing for RD he became a stopper, examples @ Coastal and Belmont, definitely the most complete walk-on in LU history. Plus his interaction with us students was what set him apart and the fact that his teams played in back to back BS Championship games and upset UVA in 97-98.

Where's the GOAT when you need one?

I know that's right, I use to watch those guys practice and they could have finished at least 5th in this years Big South Conference. "Killin' them softly is what they did" I think Scar was apart of that scout team at times, but he was the 3rd option.

I don't know who some of you guys are (even though I probably know you personally) but you are dead on about us on the scout team back when I was coaching and Allison was "playing" . Finishing 5th in the Big South might be a stretch but we used to kill the starters at times. Andy Parrish Jason Mathis and others along with myself when I wasn't into coaching (Eric Pothoven always called me a Ploach). I didn't mention Allison because I didn't want him to get a big head  . Speaking of Heads, I wish GOAT would get on here and tell you guys how I used to serve him and Marco in the 1 on 5 drill. Thats right 1 on 5. I was the push man and they had to get to the ball and stop penetration. I used to cross half court and just fire! It was hilarious at times. I lived for that drill back then....Libertine PM me because I am sure we must know each other....BV before Vines? You can't invalidate someones career because they didn't play in the Vines. We played 3 seasons of division 1 basketball before the Vines Center (basically my whole career and part of Chaz Richardson's). I wish I know who was writing what because this is good stuff. I got it...Guests, create a name for yourself that masks your identity to most but that I would recognize (ok maybe not).

with out a doubt Cliff Webber was the GOAT walkon for the Flames--- from walk on to being drafted in the 3rd round by the Celtics in 1985--played back up center on the 1983 NAIA national championship team and started for two years being named all Mason Dixon team his senior season

I can't wait to see the matchup in LaHaye this weekend! I know these guys have to set up a meeting. Maybe I can talk Jason Allison into coming out from Lexington VA and we can have a playoff to see who the best is. GMTM and FSN could broadcast the action from 90.9.....I know Cliff Webber but I didn't realize he was a walkon! Yes he was a great basketball player and could have played for our division 1 teams as well. I appreciate the info guest.

I am actually looking forward to seeing what Mo does when given the chance to play too. He is like Teddy McClain but with a decent jumpshot. I think he may get some PT next year as well.

oh yea, u should see him on the floor. BUT, we do have alot of guards coming in this season. i will tell you that moe is an extremely hard worker. he calls me every night asking me if i can open up the gym for him to shoot and practice on his handle along with alex mclean who is a gym rat and maybe THE hardest worker on the team. maybe.

Was Gary Yoder a walk-on? If he wasn't, he should've been.

After hearing the "glory days" stories, I realize that there were some golden moments in LU Ball besides the 94 run. I attended during the drought years for LU sports (with the exception of the WBB and track) late 90's...wonder what caused the downswing...anyway, I am hopeful we are seeing the dawning of a new day for LU athletics.

Certainly not of Allison's quality :) but what about the walk on they used to call "BARNY" the short guy from alaska who could flat out fill it up. I dont think he ever played for LU but was a member of some deadly scout teams for at least one year!! Scar, what about mike oveasclo??

Yes Guest, what about Mike. He was a good player right? That was a trick question and I almost fell for it! If this is the guest I think it is, that is really funny man. Inside joke but it is very funny!

That is funny for guys that remember ol Earl. There always seems to be a guy on campus that tells everyone that he is on the team and that he is redshirting (for 4 years) etc. That guy for our team was Earl.
