Big South Announces Men's Basketball Players of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Liberty junior guard Larry Blair (Charlotte, N.C.) and Winthrop junior Torrell Martin (Columbia, S.C.) have been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men’s Basketball co-Players of the Week for games played Feb. 20-26, while UNC Asheville guard Michael Ellis (Statesville, N.C.) received New Balance Freshman of the Week honors, it was announced today by the League office.

Blair averaged 28.3 points in three games, including 37 points in Liberty’s win over Winthrop last Monday, which clinched a tournament berth for the Flames. He went 13-of-23 from the field against the Eagles ( =.565), went 10-of-11 from the line ( =.909) and grabbed six rebounds and two steals. He added 17 points against Coastal Carolina and netted 31 points and six rebounds at High Point. On the week, Blair finished with a .500 percentage from the floor (28-of-56), went 7-of-16 from three-point range ( =.438), 22-of-28 from the line ( =.786) and averaged 4.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.7 steals.

Martin averaged 23.3 points and 8.0 rebounds in three games last week, including a 21-point, 6-of-7 three-point effort at Birmingham-Southern, helping clinch the Big South regular-season championship and No. 1 seed for the Eagles. He opened the week with a career-high 32 points at Liberty, hitting 11-of-20 shots ( =.550), including 5-of-9 from long-range. Against High Point, Martin scored 17 points, totaled eight rebounds and notched six steals. His three-game totals included .556 from the field (25-of-45), .560 from three-point range (14-of-25) and 3.0 steals.

Ellis averaged 17.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in two games last week. At High Point, he scored 20 points on 7-of-14 from the field ( =.500) and 5-of-6 from the line, while notching five rebounds. Against Charleston Southern, Ellis scored 15 points and handed out three assists in the losing cause. For the week, Ellis shot .481 from the floor (13-of-27), .500 from the arc (2-of-4), .875 from the line (7-of-8) and totaled 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals.
