Doubt y'all get Grant, that buyout from Bammer is for $1 million a year for the next two or three years. I'd gladly sit at home and do zilch for that kind of scratch.

Guys like that don't sit at home and do nothing but cash a check. They will always be looking for their next gig and get back in the trenches. It is seldom about money, it is about position and whatever it takes to reach their ultimate goal.

Not saying we get Grant, but people said the same thing about Gill.

Occasionally you will see a coach in Grant's situation take ONE year off to recharge the batteries, but not often. With the offers he will have he will be either coaching or doing TV next Fall.

I'd expect the hire to be someone like Gill. Someone who got a raw deal at a tough place to win but still got that all-important experience in the "big leagues" so-to-speak.

Grant would fit that bill perfectly. The problem is going to be, and always will be, recruiting.

That was a great article. Your take on the situation was more than fair. Cary Green feels that pressure to win as well, first because it's expected of him and second, by not winning there's no "dance" to go to. BSC is a 1 bid conference in both men's and women's basketball, for now.

Change that to Mantlo OR Allison, and I'm with you. It would almost certainly be Allison, since he played for Jeff and Mantlo did not. I'm all for having one LU guy as an assistant, but I think 2 is overkill, especially if they are both (to quote Medic) "kinda pale".

Too many people are wanting a "big" name, just to win the press conference. Don't win the press conference, win games, you normally don't get both. Liberty is a great job, but only for coaches who understand it. More than probably any other school, we have to do our due diligence on finding out who coaches really are. Not just guys who "say" they are Christians or they went to Liberty. We need a grinder, a young up & comer with a ton of energy, maybe not a big name OR a successful D2 head coach. Too many people on this board are caught up in names. Do your research on guys that fit our profile. Just because they say they're a Christian or that they went to Liberty, doesn't mean that they are a good fit. Liberty needs a grinding coach that understands the mission of the school, not names that "pop". Just because you have the money, doesn't mean you have to spend it

We're caught up in big names because, as it has been reported, Barber is targeting that type. From an interview with Lang a few weeks back, Barber will consider "a top assistant from a high-level program, [but] he’s very interested in finding someone with previous Division I head coaching experience."

So it makes sense that this board is spinning its wheels on coaches that fit that profile. Barber could surprise us, but I'm not banking on it.

The fact that a coach has achieved enough success in the past to become somewhat well known doesn't mean he is not a "grinder". On the contrary, I would say that is probably how most of them got where they are. All anyone who takes this job has to do is look at 80 losses in 4 years to know they have their work cut out for them.

this ^^^ though I suppose I'm kinda quoting myself

I don't think you can overstate how important it is, ESP for assistant coaches, to connect with the guys

we've seen the alternative...

ANN ARBOR -- Jeff Meyer could possibly land back in a familiar position.

According to ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman, the Michigan assistant coach is "in the equation" for the vacant head coaching position at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, where Meyer previously served as head coach for 16 years.

I believe JM would be a good choice.................... not sure he would be the BEST choice. I will levae that to JB and crew. He certainly knows what he would be getting into.

If Meyer had been in the mix 6 years ago when McKay left I would have been 100% gung ho for hiring him. I don't know if we even reached out to him then, but in any event, I don't think he was ready and probably wouldn't have taken the job. I would still be happy if he becomes our next coach, but like flameshaw, I'm not sure at age 62 he would be the BEST choice. On the other hand, one of Jeff's mentors, and the coach he perhaps admired most was the legendary Jim Phelan of Mt. St Marys. Phelan coached 49 years at the Mount and retired in 2003 at age 74. If Jeff were able to emulate him, it would give him another 12 years.

If Meyer's the guy, his age is no problem at all. We can't expect a coach to be here more than 5 years at this point. A young guy who turned the program around would bail for a better job in five years anyways.
