HIPPA regulations would apply unless he signed an "Authorization for Release of Protected Health Information", which I believe is generally done prior to anything about an injury going to the press.

As far as gambling is concerned, it should't be a factor one way or another as to whether the information is given out. It would be more "unethical", and affect the results of any bets on a game more, to withhold information about an injury than to give it out. If a key player is injured, and it is kept a "secret", the betting line will be innacurate, and someone with inside information could potentially benefit. This is one reason why this information is usually made public (with the consent of the athlete of course.)
That's just my point. This information wasn't "given out".

that only applies to certain parties giving the info out voluntarily without McLean's concent. Someone who is not bound by any rules to keep anything a secret can say whatever they want. Like someone who may have overheard it in conversation.

I see your point RTF and basically agree. If it was Alex's wish to keep this quiet and just play through it, there has been a breech of HIPPA regulations. Hard to say by whom, and I am not blaming the guy who posted it here. For those who don't know, the penalties for this are VERY STIFF.

But it WOULD (or perhaps better said COULD) be applicable to the people who had the conversation and were not careful to do it in such a manner as to not be overheard. Believe me, I know whereof I speak where this is concerned.

I think that's the part that made them upset more than anything. Someone in their locker room leaked this out when it wasn't supposed to be.

The only thing WWJFD did that could be considered wrong is present this as fact and ask someone to confirm rather than posing it as a question. Other than that, he did nothing wrong. Could he have went through PMs? Yea, he could've, but he chose to do it in the forum. From a fan standpoint, that's fine. For Alex, Coach, and the staff, I can see how it could upset them. It's all a matter of perspective. I choose to go through PMs in stuff like this because I know who to PM, etc. He chose to go public. There's nothing wrong with that.

Pretty much what I was trying to say, though I was somewhat peeved last night to go on a wild goose chase to find out nothing of the sort was happening, but that's life as a journalist. Nothing you can do about that. There are always going to be dead leads.

There was clearly some sort of injury. Alex was in a brace. He hadn't been practicing. But even McLean doesn't know what's going on right now. No idea if he has any sort of ligament damage or anything. Wait and see, he said.

Also, you all should be proud on this board. The posters are well connected enough that most that gets written here is taken pretty seriously. Which is why the sort of uproar occurred.

I think everyone needs to take it easy on WWJD. The poster simply brought forward a rumor that was circulating that clearly had a hint of truth to it. Once the facts starting coming out things became more clear (or less clear depending on your perspective) our understanding reached a new level.

I'm glad to hear Ace won't be having surgery right now and that he intends to stay on the floor.

And to Chris, chasing leads is what makes our profession fun. 8)

I feel bad that we upset coach. Although I think this probably shows you there's some truth to it. Who was the goober who leaked that to WWJFD? That person should certainly keep his mouth shut.

Somebody from Richmond told me... why do you care if you upset coach, i thought that's why we write on message boards.

Why do we care if we upset Coach? It's because we're supposed to be the biggest supporters of the program. I don't know how you are on other message boards, but the point of this one is to support the coaches, not tick them off.

Go back and read my stuff. While Dunton was here, I was a supporter. I still supported what he was working for and the team.

He's exactly right. That's exactly why we started this board. To SUPPORT athletics at Liberty University, in every way possible.
