ok since nobody else wanted to touch this one...

please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please tell me you were joking.
No joke but I think you misread what I meant. I was saying what we have to sell a coach is the whole Jesus vibe going around campus and plenty of cash. To the right hire (like Gill and Dot) those two things are huge assets. I wasn't trying to say that God's favor is on Lib and so He'll be sending Tony Bennett down 29 or anything in that vain.

If a coach isn't viewing our Christian position as an asset IMO they aren't the right person for the job.
ok thx for clarifying

I read in Lynchburg paper today article on LU's #13 seed in NCAA tournament. The most interesting part was the LU women stopped playing non D1 teams and toughened up schedule by playing teams from the "Big 5" conferences.

Men's team needs to do the same.

Because we definitely have the roster to stay competitive in those games.

It's not all about having the roster. It's about getting the roster.

If you look at the schedules of every low-major team you will see that almost all of them have at least a couple of sub-D1 games. 2-3 is the norm. We had 4 last year, which is pushing it. I totally disagree that there is nothing to gain by playing a couple of games like this every year. There are reasons most teams do it. It gives you a chance to try some things out and see what your bench can do early in the season without risking a loss. If you have balanced these games off by also scheduling some high major opponents, they can also help rebuild your player's confidence after a thrashing or 2.

I agree that 1 or 2 is a good thing at our level for the reasons you stated above. However. This year was a joke playing schools in the lowest possible classification of organized college basketball. We would af least had a PR win playing VUL if we wanted an opponent at that level

Play Lynchburg College every year and one other sub D1 school every year. More than that is not at helpful for this program but I completely understand why a program like ours needs to to play a couple a year.

I like the idea but would go further. Rotate every year between Roanoke, Randolph and maybe VUL every year. You would get good crowds

I say we leave Roanoke out of it. LC and Randolph would be good every year, maybe switch one out with Hampden-Sydney every other year if needed.

The problem with your idea is our schedule is made at least several months in advance, and is not put together by Nostradamus. There is no way of knowing for sure which D1 teams would be easy wins, and even if you had a pretty good idea of a couple, who is to say they will want to play us? The lower level teams almost always will because it's a money game for them. Having a couple of D2 or NAIA games is SOP for the vast majority of low-major teams, and that is not going to change in the foreseeable future, so get used to it.

And by Roanoke I meant Lynchburg. And then rotate who we play. One year LC. The next Randolph. Then next VUL (maybe). That way everyone gets a crack at us and we build up community relationships

I just want to chime in on the scheduling conversation. As someone who has done this job, for Liberty, I can say that as usual the conversation has been extremely over-simplified. 1st it takes 2 to tango. Secondly as OldFlame suggested, you really don't have a crystal ball to know who is actually going to be in the bottom 50 from year to year. Third the schedule is made at least several months out to 2 years in advance.

As far as playing non-D1s I say 2 is good but that is just personal preference. The reality is that in the Big South you are NOT playing for SEEDING. Comparing our TOP 50 Women's program to our bottom 50 Men's program and scheduling is a flawed comparison. When the men start competing in the top 100 then you can talk about strength of schedule. Until then it is a pointless conversation. The winner of the Big South will get a 15 or 16 seed except for a couple of exceptions when Winthrop was playing in the top 50.

I agree with scar. You have articulated my opinion much better than I ever could. Scheduling at our level is never as simple as us fans would like it to be.

Kind of like pro fans getting upset that a team doesn't make this trade or that trade. It takes 2. You can't get everything you want.

He has been mentioned quite a bit actually, but the consensus seems to be that Murray State is a much better job than LU and he wouldn't consider it because it would be a step down in the short term and hurt his chances for a high major job in the long term.

I guess that's what happens when I skim through 8 pages or so. If Liberty is serious about going into the Sun Belt or C-USA he would jump ship. Murray State is stuck in the OVC.
