I don't have that feeling with other sports. I went to 4 away games at Coastal this past year, I've been to the hockey games. My friends are planning a small road trip to Maryland for the playoffs and everything. We've started planning road trips for softball games. It's just basketball that I can't get up for for whatever reason.

A.G., from what I can tell the sports teams all seem involved in the student body. They do all hang out together, but they have plenty of friends and know plenty of people outside of their athletic circle. I don't think that is the problem, but good suggestion.

jcmanson,

are you the guy with that weird red flattop hat with the euro LU sicker on the side? If so, what's the deal with that?

good. I like the guy's passion, but I hate that thing. I don't understand what it is or why he wears it.

You'd think with as much complaining as everyone does about having nothing to do in this town, they'd jump at the chance to do anything even remotely entertaining. I've never understood it either.

I know this is the men's section but I had to make a comment about the women after tonight's game.

Considering what you guys are saying about winning, the women should be getting 4-5000 people and a packed student section every home game. They have absolutely dominated this conference for the last 9 years (especially in the Carey Green era) and they can't even get half the attendance the men get, students or otherwise.

That sort of thing boggles my mind. What do these girls have to do to get the kind of due they should be getting?

I plead guilty. I find women's basketball unwatchable for the most part. I really have to psych myself up to watch it.

I actually like the womens game for a few reasons:
-The atheletes are usually not as cocky
- They usually play as a team
- The stuff you see on the court is the same stuff (for the most part) that you and your buddies can do in a pickup game.

There are others but those are the biggest reasons I enjoy it...

I'm the same way, I don't like women's basketball that much at all.

Well that is what bothers me. The women are doing EXACTLY what everybody is wanting from the men and people are sitting at home and those who actualyl DO show up practically sit on their hands. What do you want? theem to be a high flying bunch of showboats and Coach Green to stomp around and get more red than a heart on Valentine's Day?

If people like sports, then (is it free for students?) they can see a high level of basketball in the comfort of a beautiful facility at an affordable price.
Dunks, 3 pointers, big blocks, passionate coaches, cheerleaders (for those who like cheerleaders), mascots. The whole "9 yards." Plus, if they go to all of the games, they will develop their own favorite players, will "know" all of the players, and will begin to feel like a part of the team. It's a great experience, and one that is not always readily available, but is available when you are a student in a college town. They are invited and wanted, and it is seemingly good for everyone. I'd certainly want to be a part of it. That's if people like sports.

Yes, all LU games are free I believe, except for hockey which is still at the club level.

It's not even about liking sports. It's about supporting your school. The cheers for UNCA were louder than for our team, which should never happen in a home arena. I understand the Vines Center is a HUGE arena for college basketball but we can still make a lot of noise.

I forgot to mention this earlier but...for those at LU that aren't going to the men's games, they are really missing out when it comes to watching Larry Blair...He's by far the most exciting player to watch in the league right now and even though the team is struggling, he's flat-out taking over games...Granted, I'm a basketball junkie, but I've been making it a point to catch as many LU televised games on-line, mainly to watch Blair play...

hey- thanks for the update on your lower GI issues. we all appreciate that. you freak

To echo the other guys, welcome aboard- by the way- all of our wives/wives 2b/GFs are convinced that we're insane. Ask Mrs SCAR what she thinks. (and its NOT how very hot I am)
I end up sleeping on the front lawn every couple of weeks b/c of these guys on here.

SJ- by the way- I'll pile on just because you know me and know that we're cool: but you need to step up on this whole MBB thing dude. Suck it up and get out to these games- you're a big sports nut and have the potential to stir up a lot of fan appreciation- make the best of that, man!

You'll be pushing 40 and selling real estate in no time, and wish you had the chance to do this stuff.

I don't sell real estate, I just tell people how much they should sell it for. I appraise stuff.

I just haven't had the desire to go to the games assuming I knew about them in advance. Normally I don't know about them until I'm at home and flipping through the tv and see the game on tv, and I end up watching part of it there.

I have followed the Flames closely this season, but have only attended one game. I live about three hours away and as an alumni I can definitely say the reason I haven't attended as many games as usual is because of their record. I could tell early on it be a long season, and that has played out. That being said, when I lived in Lynchburg I attended almost every home game regardless of the record. It would be nice to see more support from the students. I'm sure it would give the team more of an edge, especially in the close games.

I spent nearly 7 years at LU (tried to squeeze 4 years in to 7) and attended quite a few games. I was fortunate because it was mostly during the Peter Aluma era and we had a top end team for most of his career. We had no problem getting fans back then. We would usually fill up the student side of the court. I love basketball and usually attended 75% or more of the girls and guys games, but I am different. The average fans won't regularly attend games unless the product is winning. I can guarantee (although it doesn't seem to work with the girls) if you put a winning product on the court for consecutive years, you'll get the attendance back. With a growing campus population, it won't take much to pack that place out IMO. The problem is that the product has not been consistantly good for a long time.

My first few years at Liberty, I went to EVERY home football game. My last two years at Liberty, I attended one game each season. Homecoming. The product was horrible and I chose to stay home with my buddies and watch REAL college football on tv. The reason I made that choice was because the team was just horrendous to watch. That might make me a fairweather fan, but I gave the team a chance to get better. Why should I continue to spend my energy supporting a team that had no direction? In my 4 years of pretty heavy attendance, they had one year where they were close to the playoffs. The rest were seasons that were done by the 5th game. At that time the games became a "freshman/sophomore who have nothing better to do" attendance.

Every team has their fairweather fans, but you have to have those fans to pack out your home arena/stadium. Rather than rip them for being fairweather, why not give them a team to back? I really think that if the team put up back to back NCAA tourney appearances, you would see an attendance boom.

I certainly don't have the answers to why people don't come out but I must say that having a winninng team consistently is no guarantee. Winthrop has won 5 or 7 and their place only holds 6000 people yet they don't pack it out. 4500 on a good night although they get pretty good student participation for many games...Our girls are going for their 10th consecutive Conference title. I know it is women's basketball but they should be doing a lot better in attendance especially when you have a player like Katie Feenstra and now we have tripplets. Having those players alone should be worth the price of admission (free for students) let alone all the winning and they really are fun to watch. Also the year after we won the Big South Tournament when we filled the Vines Center, attendence was actually down from the previous year even though we had Men's and Women's champions playing....Like I said I don't know why there are not more folks coming out but winning is not the Panecea that we are making it out to be.

That still doesn't really address my point. I mean what, do the women have to go through a 5 win season and then get back to kicking everybody's butt to get them to fill the seats or something?
