It was a two and a half years well waited........

Is no one even going to mention Gabe Martin? He was never the best in the conference at any one category but he was top three in the conference in boards, points and assists every year he was a flame. He was the best floor general Liberty has had in the past decade. Not to mention that he got us dancing in '04 with a coach who now coaches girls HS hoops.

He may have not been the best basketball player LU ever had, but he certainly deserves honroable mention.

He gets the "most likely to dunk" superlative.

I would argue against Hubbard and give you Brian Woodson. Not only did the guy know how to run an offense but man did he know how to skip class.

I think the discussion begins and ends with Aluma, second would be Nwoso, 3rd Alston, and 583th Rob Attaway.

He is up there, no doubt, but probably gets points off for only attending for two years (in the same vein, we should deduct points from anyone who played pre-D-I). The same thing with Alex McLean, who should be in the discussion for second-tier all-LU.

That's why Aluma gets my vote. Four years of NCAA D-I competition.

And no one's mentioned Hillebrand yet...

Chris Caldwell was pretty good for some really bad teams (thank you, Hanky era), but I'd still put him behind Blair (although ahead of Seth, but just for now).

We only had bailey for 3 years after he transferred from Rutgers. But having followed the program since the Mid '80s this would be my top 5:

1. Bailey
2. Aluma
3. Juice
4, 5 & 6. U pick Em of Blair/Hildo/Formerplayer

Why no love for Attaway? He was the Christian athlete of the year in Texas (while in high school), and it's not his fault that RD wouldn't let him play his senior year.

Rob Attaway was a shooting guard who was ordered by Mel Hankinson not to shoot, probably because he couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat.

Of the 3 retired jersey honorees:

1. Hildebrand (a proven leader and winner who possessed a potent combination of playmaking & scoring)
2. Aluma (constantly drew double teams; strong inside scorer; great shot blocker and defender)
3. Juice (played 3 yrs and got better every year; developed into a dominant big man)

Blair and Curry will eventually be in that ring of honor. I'd probably place them both ahead of Juice and after Aluma for the moment.

Nice old school take and I believe he remains the only Flame ever selected in the NBA Draft. But he's not on the level of the guys we've discussed.

Incidentally welcome to the board.

Eric Gordon was selected by the Suns as well but that was a last round Mr Irrelevant type of thing. Cliff was selected by the Celtics before trying to make it as a tight end at Carson Neuman. I always liked Cliff as a player but we were DII back then and its hard to compare.

It should be noted also that Cliff was selected in the 4th round of the NBA draft, which of course no longer exists. I wouldn't go so far as to say he wasn't on the same level as the players from the D1 era though. He had monumental battles with Jerome Kersey of Longwood, who went on to have a long NBA career.

Doesn't Hess have his jersey retired? Or just 'honored'?

I remember Ezra Hill getting drafted by the Phoenix Suns and he hardly ever played except in blowouts. I think that it had something to do with being related to someone in the front office.

Karl Hess, who was just brought up here, put up some great numbers and gave us our NCCAA championship with Ed Victors was before my time but I think Karl did have his jersey retired. I could be wrong about that but it probably should be.

Back when I went to LU Steve Isaacs was the center and a very good one at that. Then came Cliff Webber who I thought was a little more athletic than Steve which helped his draft status. Other great players back in my time were Eric Gordon, Kenny Gunn, Greg McCauley, and Mike Minnett was concidered the up and comer and he certainly was a good one. Those were the early Jeff Meyers teams and we always had consistently solid teams but struggled against Mt St Marys and Randolph Macon back in our Mason Dixon conference days.

If we are only counting the 4 retired jerseys, then I would hae to go with number 71, Jerry Falwell. Back in the day he used to play with the students, and i hear he was a pretty good shot, and quite physical
