I say foul them but I qualify it like this. You need to know who the worst free throw shooter on the floor is (I know in coaching class today we talked about scouting and that is one of the questions Coach Wooten put on the sample scouting sheet they used in the textbook). You want to force them to get him the ball and then you foul him as quickly as you can. This works well also if they do not have any timeouts because they wont have a free opportunity yo sub in good free throw shooters to replace the bad ones. If you allow them to shoot you know that they probably have a set play for these sorts of situations that will get someone an open look and even if not, one missed assignment and you could be looking at OT

I don't have a problem with going for the foul there but wouldn't be my choice.
you are exactly right, sir.

It seems that FF is every bit as divided on this issue as the coaching "community". Someone needs to do a scientific study of say 100 randomly selected games that meet this scenario and tabulate the outcomes.

Nope...fouling wins b/c RM says foul and he knows 100 times more then any of us...so the score is 160 - 16 :P

The situation came up again in the WU/App State game. WU hit a pair of FTs with 4.9 seconds left to go up by three and called timeout. Apparently in the huddle, Peele told the team to let App inbound the ball in front of them in the back court and then let them cross halfcourt and then foul before they get near the 3-point line. Justin Burton tried to foul the guy, but didn't make enough contact to force the whistle, but he did bump the guy enough that he ended up running into Mantoris Robinson, which drew the foul with .7 seconds left...now the guy wasn't in the act of shooting in my opinion, but the refs said he was, and he was a few feet behind the 3-point line. So App got 3 FTs with a chance to tie. He missed the first, made the second, and missed the third purposely...the rebound went pretty high and over WU's first line rebounders, an App player was able to get up and caught and released the ball in time to tie it, but it rimmed out...So WU ended up winning, but executing the 'unintentional' intentional foul isn't always as easy it sounds..

I think it is proving our point (the fouling proponents) when a case where fouling ALMOST backfired is used as an illustration that it is risky. Give us some examples where it actually DID backfire. They are hard to find. SCAR had to go back to his HS coaching days to think of one.
