What a group of idiots!!! They embarrassed the league last year by making us play the BSC tournament in the hole they call a Gym in Asheville and then to make it worse - they center their whole focus on George (who didn't even play) by putting a National televised game back in there. They should have made Asheville come to us. I am certain that the reason we played so poorly is because we had to shoot in Gym where the goals are bolted to the walls. Wake-Up Big South - Liberty is your focal point for the next 4 years - we give the league more exposure than any other team with televising all our games and now we have the most exciting freshman in college basketball - hands down.
Here we go again, I don't care about you venting your anger towards the Big South- but what's that have to do with UNCA making the best decision for their team last year?? I'm sorry you can't win in our place.. but honestly ask yourself if our Seniors who played their hearts out for 4 years, should've played a potential final home game for them in the Asheville Civic Center vs their home court?? We haven't played a game in the Civic Center for over 3 years now.. Get real- this idea was played out last year- the rules are simple- WIN the conference & you get home court advantage- simple as that.. So no one made you play there- you weren't good enough (record wise) to play anywhere else.. Is it a shame that myself & all of our guys played 4 years in such a small, antiquated facility- ABSOLUTELY!! But to change the venue for the ability to sell more tickets is no less fair to the 1st place TEAM than not being able to have as much ticket availability for your fans.. The tourney was played at the Vines for several years but only the 1 year LU was in the final did it look good on TV- there's really no great solution for the conference except for what is in place- you certainly wouldn't complain if you guys finished first every once in a while..

In regard to Kenny not playing- you should be ashamed to even bring that into the conversation- he didn't choose not to play, I trust you are aware of his injury & I'll leave it at that.. these TV games are planned well in advance of any forseeable injury like his was.. what if you guys get your Bracketbuster wish & play Davidson- then something happens to inhibit one of the Curry's from playing- would that be an embarassment as well?? That thought process is pretty thoughtless...

And as much as it pains me to say- WINTHROP gives the league more exposure than any other team by playing in March..

dude...you cant honestly say that on ESPN your gym looked anything other then a joke...they SHOULD have moved the game or dont host...I'm sure we'll see some stipulations in the near future to keep things like this from happening and to encourage schools to make improvements when a High School Gym is a better option. I mean it was smart on UNCA's part to push for it...I mean you pack 1000 people into a closet rooting for one team, that can get loud

It was a fluke came....first BSC game, decent opponent, ESPN coverage, mainly freshman team, second game, horrible gym..... fluke game.

It might have been a fluke but it doesn't change the fact they beat us and right now hold the advantage over us. They still have to come to the Vines center and play but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

We've had some great wins to start this season but it's a long year and we have a tough stretch against Clemson, DePaul and St. Louis coming up. Before we annoint ourselves Big South champs, let's get to Big South play.

Well they won, give them credit until we play them again...

Although not 1 ounce of me thinks that game will play out like that again...we're a different team right now...but like I said now we have to prove them wrong.

True.. Well with the camera angle facing the Bulldog Club seats & not the capacity filled student section it looked fairly empty on TV (Vines Center setup is reversed & better for TV)- that look was no worse than the Vines Center Big South championships in the late 90's- maybe we should've mandated season ticket hoders to not work on Tuesday at 2 pm.. oh wait- they have JOBS!! What were we thinking having no control over ESPN.. Crazy!

There was most definately some real negativity going on, and IMHO a lot of conclusions were jumped to based on a very limited amount of data. "If this team isn't hitting it's 3s we will get blown out every time" (or words to that effect) were typed more than once. Well, we just beat 2 pretty good, well coached, CAA teams in 48 hours hitting a mediocre % both from 3 and overall. Venting is fine, but when people do it with so much vitriol after only one bad game, I don't think it's out of line to at least wonder about agendas. Great to hear everyone is on the bandwagon (oops, I mean "on board") now.
With the way this team played at UNCA, then we would be 1-5 right now if we didn't hit our threes. McKay adjusted his game. He decided to start getting some post touches. He decided that driving to the basket is a good thing. And this new "revised" version of the McKay offense is winning games for us.

That and the fact that Seth Curry has ice water in his veins...

Which is why we should've had that game at LU. Cancel classes from 1:30 to 4:30 and you'll have 7000 people at the game guaranteed.

I guess I also find it funny how in various other threads you praise how great the LU freshmen are, etc, etc.. but then when it comes to the UNCA game, it boiled down to our tiny little HS gym.. Correct me if I am wrong but didn't your freshmen win many games over the past 3-4 years in similar settings?? Since they were highly successful in HS then, why is the setting (excuse) brought into that one loss??

Guys- the Justice Center SUCKS as a venue!! As a player though it is/was an awesome place to play in & truly is a home court advantage (there are countless other D-1 programs with similar sized arenas)- ask your pre-Vines Center players how they feel about the smaller confines that they played in.. So.. laugh all you want, we certainly do as well at times..

No debate, hands down.. but it's not like the Vines Center was made solely for your basketball programs, it was made for multiple purposes, convocations, etc- you guys know far better than I do of all the things that happen there- and those other things actually utilize the entire capacity for which it was built.. i loved playing up there- we had success up there too although I don't understand why- since we weren't used to playing in such a large arena..

And I still take exception to Kenny being brought into that comment though.. you guys should be embarassed by that thoughtless remark.

Dingaling...I mean Kingaling...Sorry...There comes a point when you start thinking about what is best for your league and school in the long term - not what will help us this year. You might have an advantage playing in that broom closet you call a gym, but in the long term perspective - it sets back the BS every time that gym is on TV. NOBODY WANTS TO PLAY IN A JUNIOR HIGH GYM and when someone that has never seen one of our schools play before and see that we are playing in a state penitentiary gymnasium - it's hurts everybody! I wasn't even making the point about the tournament last year, as much as the decision to host ESPN at 2:00 in Asheville in that shoebox, you call home. That game could have been played up here in the Vines Center in front of 8,000 students (we could have even given you 50 tickets to get all your fans in). I wasn't trashing George - I wish he was playing - I know he would have killed us, but he would have been good for the league. I was pointing out the reason you don't put all your eggs in one marketing basket - and if he plays great, people focus on him and less on the Oversized Garage you play in. There was no reason you guys couldn't have come up here to a real Arena while yours gets completed.

I can appreciate those real reasons (we didn't blame the Smith Center's size for the debacle Sunday night).. but you gotta say we earned the right to have the BS tourney games at the Justice Center last year, sorry you don't like that.. Maybe RM should've pulled a Hoosiers moment & measured the free throw line last year during the 1st practice/shoot around at UNCA to show that it was still 15 feet away.. D-1 players have (should have at least) far more mental fortitude than to worry about the arena once the ball is tipped off- fans who have never played the game may not understand that concept.. It's kinda funny how some folks still can't get over that BS tourney game even 9-10 months later- move on folks.. it is what it is until 2010 when (hopefully) the new place will be completed.. until then home court advantage is to be settled on the court..

The only problem I have with UNCA's gym is the backboards are bolted on the wall. They are not free standing goals like at all of the other schools. Say what you want, but there's a difference in playing on a free standing vs a bolted backboard.

That plays big into shots falling. UNCA's players are used to shooting on those goals, but other teams are not. I'm not trying to say we lost to Asheville simply because their goals suck, but it definitely had a part in it. We played like crap, that's why we lost. Although I am somewhat thankful for that loss because it was so embarrassing that it will probably be what we look back on as the turning point for this season. We are a different team now than we were against Asheville.

Since I'm a Dingaling now (real classy by the way but why did I expect anything else from you).. let me get this right.. our TV game exposure hurts the league & every BS school?? Is that your position??
- Did it hurt Winthrop from recruiting great players & winning the BS consistently??
- Did it hurt LU from getting your fabled Top 50 recruiting class including Seth Curry this year??
- Does it keep the BS from the ESPN Bracketbusters games each year??
- Since "NOBODY WANTS TO PLAY IN A JUNIOR HIGH GYM" does it stop UNCA from getting great players year in & year out or from winning the Big South regular season last year or the other 3 times Eddie Biedenbach has won it since 1996??
- Did it stop UNCA from either the NCAA or NIT bids we received the last 5 years?

Or is the only real point of frustration you have that you couldn't beat us there last year or this year?? Quit hating on something that is still good for the league- any TV games with national exposure is great for the BS conference (kinda like there's no such thing as bad press!)- LU just didn't hold up there end of it this year.. if you guys had won that game & Seth had scored 40, he would already have his jersey retired up there.. But Seth didn't & although he played well he was outplayed that game by our freshmen point guard JP Primm.. but I guess JP was a nobody that game to "WANT TO PLAY IN A JUNIOR HIGH GYM" right?? Bottom line is no one sitting at home 2 weeks ago, would've focused as much on our gym if LU had given the audience any sign of making that a game- you guys laid an egg & so even the announcers had no prepared material to spout out.. So I'd say that LU's performance was as much of a negative factor, if not more so, than the gym where the game was played.. but good luck with all your jokes..

Proto- I'm not saying you trashed George, but everyone knew he didn't play in that game- you seemed to want to slide that quip in inappropriately.. IMHO- So if Curry gets hurt in his career (not at all wishing that on him) & can't play a TV game- should the Big South change the venue?? That's illogical & you know the show must go on storylines be darned..

That's what I'm saying and King - I did play a lot of ball and still do, and that Gym is worse than any high school gym I ever played in. Can we at least get some nice baskets? I would be willing to throw some money in.

UNCA is fortunate to be in a position to get the new facility. There were many faculty and admins there who were greatly opposed to all things athletics. Even the Faculty Athletic Rep was a moron who was a D3 advocate. At UNCA (or any state school in NC), things move slowly. More slowly for a school that abides by the letter of the law for all hiring and funding. Although the Justice Center as it stands now, is HS level...there HAVE been a lot of improvements in the facility over the past 10 years, as kingaling can testify to. Portable backboards, however, is NOT one of them, due to the proximity of the walls.

SJ- great idea for the portable goals, it was proposed years back.. unfortunately those things called walls get in the way!! I would've thought that all you arena experts would've figured that out...

Sorry about the Dingaling thing - it was just too easy. You can trash my name if you want. Maybe Amateurtotype? RookieType? Old warn out invention? Rototype? I'm happy to have Asheville in our league - just can't wait to get you in a new Gym!! I think you understand about my George comment, but come on - you know that was the only reason we played there, afterall you guys are young and ESPN wanted the marketing value. My guess is this is how it happened...

Coach Biedenbach, "You want us to play a 2:00 game against a Big South opponent that early in the season?"
Kyle, "Yes, we need to get as much exposure out of Mr. Kenny George as we can - People love him."
Coach Biedenbach, "well, if I'm going to have to play that early with a team with 8 freshman, we play here."
Kyle, "Of course - we wouldn't want to make you travel away from home and have a disadvantage, would we."
Coach Biedenbach, "AND...I want to play Liberty, because they have 7 freshman and that Curry kid will only get better as the year goes on."
Kyle, "Of course - Liberty is always willing to play anywhere to help benefit the Big South."
Coach Biedenbach, "They also have that nice 8,500 seat open Arena - they will never be able to shoot in here (laughter)."
