No one has said anything about the impromptu dance session that they had at halftime. First is was one heavy set middle aged guy, then some girls joined in, then some of the pep band, then Becky Falwell, and even some bare chested guys who had obviously never danced before in their life. The students LOVED it, and even the Baptist crowd was into it.

Somebody filmed it put it on You Tube already:

But back to the game, I couldn't think of a more exciting finish for Coach's Layer's 300th win.

Great game and it's fun to watch this team. They play with a lot of heart. The first half belonged to Liberty and Asheville was the stronger team in the second. Cunningham played great and we did not have an answer for him. I like the way Dickey plays.

Congrats to Coach Layer for win #300. The crowds are growing and it should continue after winning an exciting game like tonight.

Jesse, JB, Evan & Minaya are proving to be a solid core. Burrus, JVP, Jeremy and JC are filling their roles well.

Lang's article about the game:

Brown atones for miscues with game-winning putback
By Chris Lang
Published: January 27, 2011
In his mind, John Brown was going to have plenty to apologize for Thursday night after Liberty’s game against UNC Asheville at the Vines Center.

First, he missed a defensive assignment, leading to John Williams’ highlight-reel dunk over teammate Sommy Ogukwe in the first half. Second, with the game tied in the closing seconds of regulation and the Flames on a fast break after a defensive rebound, Brown called a timeout, whistles tweeting just as Jesse Sanders was about to attempt the game-winning layup.

"Everybody started looking at me like JB! What are you doing!" he said sheepishly.

All was forgiven in overtime, though. Brown, the Big South’s leading rebounder did what he does best, cleaning up a mess around the rim. After David Minaya’s 3-pointer went off the mark, Brown snuck in front of Asheville’s D.J. Cunningham, grabbed the loose ball — which was deflected by teammate Antwan Burrus — and laid it in just before the buzzer, giving the Flames an 83-81 victory and sending the rowdy Liberty student section into a frenzy.

If we would've won by 10 points in regulation no one would have been on the court. It had nothing to do with UNCA and everything to do with how the game played out.
I was 4 rows from the floor. My opinion is certainly in the minority, but per your guidelines I can talk about it.

That's James D. Black, an Honors Program student and member of our JV Quiz Bowl team, and he loves God with all his heart. He's got his own dancing page (with video clips) on Facebook.

Sorry but I must correct you... every game we've won (except maybe 3) have been close.

Just saw the replay of the game and have to say that UNCA did a great job in the last 10 minutes of the game. They showed a lot of patience and found our weak spots. With JVP out we had no size to counter them. (JVP and Sommy need to lock themselves in the weight room from april-october)

Overall, it was a great game. We got out muscled on the boards for one of the few times this year and I thought we settled for jumpers a few times instead of going inside and trying to get a few fouls on their bigs. Can't complain about the hustle or the heart though. I echo some of the other comments: These guys might be the toughest match-up position by position for us in the Big South.

Looking forward to saturday and then a huge road trip next week.

what a great game last night. so awesome to see the students coming back and heating up the furnace. if that game not not win students to coming out i do not know what will. this team has so much heart and just plays so hard. it is great to see. only problem i had last night was not pulling JVP earlier for burrus because #33 for UNCA was wearing him out physically. both JB and evan struggled a bit with their ball handling, but they both made plays when we needed them. hoping for a bigger crowd saturday for GWU. GO FLAMES!!!!

ps. watched the replay on espn3.....scar was classic..."what can brown do for you?? he can win a basketball game"...love it.

If anything what made me mad was that guy with the Hokie hoodie that stormed the court... dude, you can't storm the LU court with another hoodie... YOU'RE AT A LIBERTY GAME!!!!

You may see me wearing my West Virginia hoodie, but NEVER at a Liberty game.

just read the entire thread....i could care less about what color shirts they wear! they are coming out and being loud and are consistent!! and rushing the floor?? why not. whatever the fans can do to get people exciting about coming out, then i promote it all. we have to start looking past all this stuff and be happy the students are coming back!!

Oh I'm happy that they're there. I'm a huge fan of them. I just know how much time and effort we spent trying to get everyone in red and I've worked for the athletic department so wearing red's a big deal to me. I'd rather them be there in black than not be there at all, but now that they're there, I wanna get them in red.

As for the officiating, Liberty definitely got the benefit of the doubt on most of the calls.

Chene Phillips mugged Matt Dickey on one occasion, and no call. Minaya mugged Dickey again late in the game down on the baseline, and they ruled it out of bounds of Dickey's leg. Replay clearly showed Minaya got all shoulder. Gordon and Sanders both got away with push-offs in the first half, and then they turned around and called one on Primm.

One of Cunningham's blocks off the backboard (on John Brown) should have been a goaltend, but not many calls went against LU.

I hope we don’t see that team again in the tourney. They’re tough. I hope they get paired up with CCU. With Cunningham inside and those guards who can slash and shoot. They’re a tough cover.

Evan is the last guy I want shooting FTs in critical situations. Hope he gets over that.

JA – wow what a bad shot kid. I wish Layer would stop seeing RJr beside his name and leave him on the bench. JC should be getting ALL of JA’s minutes.

The defense as a whole last night was lacking the more I think about it. I remember situations where nearly everyone was caught way out of positions except maybe Gordan.

I knew that was why, but I got to think he will improve with play. Or don't put JA in at the end. Bring in Carter
