Thanks.. Returning this to basketball & since I'm not gonna start a UNCA game thread, thought some of y'all might find this interesting about Asheville's John Williams being in similar company as a guy I played against in LU's Peter Aluma..

You can respect your rivals and their opinions. Most offered here are constructive and interesting to read. That's why I lurk around here a bit more than other boards. Most here can take off their red/white/blue Falwell-emblazened glasses and give a true opinion on things, which is cool. 8)

UNCA looked really good against VMI. Of course VMI didnt play good D and they went cold shooting late. I think UNCA is going to have a strong run here at the end of the season.

I had been listening to some audio highlights of the game and I thought to myself that a result like Thursday's can be a season changer if you arent careful...losing the way that UNCA did can have major effects psychologically so to come back out and get a win like they did definitely helped...if they had come out and laid an egg against VMI that could have caused a psychological snowball effect that would have covered a good portion of the second half of the conference schedule.

We have 7 left to play.

We have a 4 game lead.

A win @ Chuck South essentially will lock it up for us, because we'd then have at least a 5 game lead on UNCA (because we own the tiebreaker with them, so if we tie, we get the nod), and a 6 game lead on CSU, with 6 to play. That's enough to lock it up, in my opinion. I guess Winthrop is still a factor, but they're 4.5 back. If we lose 5 of 7, we're still likely to be ahead of Winthrop, but they could sneak up on us if we collapse.

I don't think any of this matters. I think we take care of business and finish comfortably in the top 2.

I was just looking at the scenarios. We have 7 conference games remaining. If we win 4 of those 7 conference games, we would secure the 2 spot in the conference tourney. Three (3) wins in conference play, however, may be enough to get it done.

Winning out, either Asheville or Chuck South could reach 13 conference wins (both teams can't do it as they have to play each other on Feb. 15.).

Winthrop has eight (8) conference games remaining, so, in theory, WU could also reach 13 wins. This is unlikely, though, since Winthrop still has to play Asheville and Chuck South. WU winning out, though, would prevent both teams; Asheville and Chuck South from reaching 13 wins. If we take care of business in Rock Hill, the Flames COULD secure the #2 seed with only 3 more conference wins.

I'm a UNC-Asheville fan right now. If Asheville were to win out, both Chuck South and Winthrop would be prevented from reaching 13 wins in conference. IF LU only managed to win 3 of the next 7 conference games, both Asheville and LU would have a record of 13-5 in conference play. LU has swept Asheville, thus giving LU the #2 seed. For me, it seems that 3 wins is the magic number. Obviously, I would like to see us win out, and force a tiebreaker for the #1 seed (assuming CCU only loses to LU). :D

What I want to see is UNCA be the 4 or 5 seed so they can be paired with coastal and we don't have to play them until the finals (assuming we are a 2 seed).

Sun News on Coastal Carolina:

Indeed. The Chants return to Kimbel Arena for a home game Thursday against Liberty, which has one league loss so far and looks to be CCU's chief challenger.

"This was a tough stretch, and we managed it," Ellis said of the four straight road games. "We go into February, and we're working towards March. It's going to be a neat week - a big week - because it's kind of like championship week this week. ... Liberty, they're the team that's right there with us."

I didn't think of that. If we are the #2 seed, UNCA being 4 of 5 would be great. At this point, with CCU losing Holmes, UNCA does scare me the most with regards to matchup. If we get the #1 seed, then my scenario of them getting a #3 seed would be ideal. It will definitely be interesting to see how all of this plays out. I'm excited. Play Basketball

I'm gunna reserve judgement on who would be our "worst matchup" in the tournament at least til Thursday at about 10:00. CCU has some depth, and appears to have adjusted well since Holmes' dismissal. Oh, by the way they are 11-0 and have won 18 straight overall. The final score of our game at the Vines was close, but that was only after we hit a flurry of 3s down the stretch to narrow what was a fairly comfortable lead by the chickens. We have had 2 knockdown dragout fights with UNCA, but the bottom line is, we beat them, and I place absolutely no stock in the "it's really hard to beat a team 3 times" theory. It's not born out by the facts, and it quite frankly doesn't make sense anyway.

Yeah, shooting under 50% from the FT line and losing to a really bad RU team will do that. Rough couple of games for WU this week.

Yeah but I just don’t see Peele as being on the hot seat though. 2 trips to the Dance in 4 years is not bad. And that’s IF you don’t make it this year.

2005-Swept CSU regular season, first round home game in conference tourney and we lose to CSU.
2007-Swept VMI regular season, first round home game loss in conference tourney to VMI

Those were the last two seasons we played a team 3 times and won the first two meetings. While anything can happen on any given night, the evidence does suggest it is hard to beat a team 3 times.

That's totally anecdotal ATrain. There have been actual scientific studies done on this. The team that wins the first and second game wins the 3rd something like 70% of the time. The reason? The same reason they won the first 2. They are BETTER.

WU got off to an even worse start overall last year, but by this time they had pretty much righted the ship and were starting to play well. Not sure what their problem is right now, but I still wouldn't take them lightly come tournament time.
