Ed Dantes wrote:Okay. I want Liberty to succeed. I have been very vocal over the last few pages as to why I think the Layer decision precludes this. I have taken heat for this... so please, put together a coherent argument as to why this is a good move. This isn't a challenge saying it can't be done. I mean, I wrote an article when Dunton was hired in '02 about why it was a good move. Please someone do the same. I want to believe. I want to be wrong. Someone convince me.

This is what I have so far:
- Layer is a good recruiter
- Layer knows and appreciates the LU atmosphere.

Don't read after you much, but based on your definition of a good move above, I would say we made a pretty good hire. Preferred Cameron $, but don't believe he was in the equation. Will support DL/JB until they give me reason to do otherwise.

Great touch to put the presser on a live link.

Also, just a few nuggets:

CSU had the lowest budget of anyone in the MWC when Layer was there.

CSU had the worst facilities in the MWC when he was there.

CSU is in a football area. No one cares about the basketball program. Even Air Force, who has been nationally ranked, gets no press.

Jason Smith was 276th in his high school class out of high school. Three years later he was drafted 20th.

While he's a great big man coach, he was the coach of the guards at Marquette. He's got experience doing that as well.

Gotcha. I'll give you the last word. What's done is done.

Go Flames.
Don't just stop talking about it. If you want to have a legit discussion on why this could be a good move, let's do it.

What do you disagree with in my post? What type of facts do you need? No one is saying he's coaching Jesus. We're saying he can, keyword can, be successful here.
I'm sorry if my last post was taken the wrong way -- frankly, SJ, of everyone's opinion here, I think yours carries the most weight. I'm being serious. You are plugged in, know your stuff, and a true fan. I saw a lot of people saying 'this rocks' but not a lot of reasons why. When I used stats to back up my concern, I was called a disgrace to Christianity (yes, I was).

You enumerated reasons why I should be hopeful. I considered your post to be rational. I'm not trying to cop out of the discussion. I made my point, I understand where people like you are coming from, and have nothing to add that I haven't said before.

Here are the facts...

#1) Dale Layer is the head coach
#2) We want Liberty to succeed

and now that #1 is a fact... we need to support him in order for #2 to be a reality.

My question is How much Do you all think Mckay Limited Layer when he was a assistant here?, My guess is Mckay allowed Layer to do whatever he wanted to do in terms of how are big men were coached, Perhaps this wont be much different in terms of how are big man operated under layer as a assistant coach. Layer did a Good job With Alex Mclean , but not such a good Job developing Russle . I do believe that Alex Mclean Really did become a much better Post Player With Layers coaching, so that might Lead to Carter Mcmasters becoming a very good post player and Austin Smith. I hope Layer is happy and plans on being are head coach for a very long time, and i pray we dont end up Like Colorado State

Before anyone flips out, over reacts, or looks too far into it:

Austin Smith will not be at the press conference. He's visiting family for Easter. It's been planned for months. Don't freak out.

Just my opinion, but by his Senior year, when Layer got his coaching hands on him, it looked like Russ had already mailed it in. Alex was our post player, Russ was getting his degree, and he was just putting in his time to get his last year of school paid for. Someone who knows him may say differently, and I have no argument to that. It just appeared that way to me.

Regarding our relative position in our conference, we are the polar opposite of Colorado State. We have the biggest budget, the best facilities, and arguably the most rabid fan base. It is well within the realm of probability that a coach could succeed here when he didn't there.

I for one am ready to move on from the blah blah blah of the last few days and move forward to our New Head Coach - Dale Layer.

JB has spoken and has given me no reason to doubt him yet. So if he's a Layer guy, then I am now a Layer guy.

The rest is all semantics from a bunch of message board wanna be ADs (me included).

I am excited to see where Coach Layer will take us and what the next few weeks of recruiting wrap up will look like!

Trying to get anything out of Russ was a long shot by that point. His confidence had disappeared. I don't think "mailed it in" is the right phrase because I don't think he checked out but maybe believed the hype that him playing consistently was a long shot?

Give your coach a chance, jesus. I know hiring a new coach with an unimpressive resume is a scary thing, but that doesn't mean it won't pay off. Just take a look at JMU this season. If he's a good coach who preaches defense, ya'll have a chance to be a pretty good team.

also, there were a lot of JMU fans last year calling for various other coaches who have either been fired or who have horrendous records. Sometimes coaches who have attractive resumes just don't work out.

As usual the BS Edge doesn't work. I use the Microsoft Media Player and have no problems with any other site. Any ideas? Can anyone post it somewhere else so us BS Edge challenged people can see it. Thanks.

I use'd firefox with the lastest WMP plugin and it worked perfect for me. IE has given me some problems in the past.
