I have to agree with Brokeback on one of his points... the IP address thing is a big privacy issue. I have said before that people can share IP addresses or even steal them over a wireless connection. I have people at the house all the time and I definitely wouldn't want to be credited with some of the stuff they might say... some of my friends are free spirits, and could say just about anything.
The one other issue is with the Viper deal... HMO, going by what you said about Viper's IP address from a couple weeks ago, I assumed that I knew who it was and may have formed a negative opinion of that person. Now apparently it turns out that it wasn't who you thought it was... but for the last two weeks I have let what you typed affect my thought process, and that's not fair to the person involved.
This could also discourage people from posting in fear that they might be "outed." It just seems a little too "Big Brother" for my liking. As far as the LU Staffer deal... I don't know the details, but is it possible that someone could have been on a vacation and posted out of state? Also, we could really get into semantics and say LU Staffer could stand for current or former staffer or it could even be "Livingston University" Staffer. When we start down this slope it can be tricky and I wouldn't want to be responsible if I outed someone and was wrong. That could have ramifications as well.
I'm all for registering... and if Sly wants to make that mandatory then that's fine... but until then, if guests are allowed then they should have the same rights as anyone else.
If someone posts something that is unfounded and "over the line," then delete the post, don't try to crucify who we might "think" is the culprit.
Just some thoughts from someone with a media mentality, that hates anything that shuts down the open flow of ideas.
