I would think McKay would be likely to bring in his whole staff from NM if he chose to.
Coop would have to form his own staff since he was only an assistant.
Coming from NM, not sure for family reasons, if all of McKay's guys would come east.

For Salary... what is interesting is if:

EXAMPLE no Fact, LU offered $150 K for the job. Maybe Coop feels he should get more to come. What is the value of 25K in this situation? That depends on the person.

Now for McKay. 2 things.

He is getting a buyout I would imagine from UNM. Depending on the terms of the contract he may get that in full or the difference from his next job. Example: Say Mckay was gettting $400 K from UNM. Either UNM pays him the full 400 K for the remainder of his contract or a difference of what LU pays him. So, to McKay it may not matter what LU pays him, he is still getting paid. 400 total - 150 LU = 250 is what NM pays.

If I am wrong correct me.

Look! I found another interesting article.

"So often a perception is created for us by others, most of whom don't know it," Fisher said. "When Ritchie was first hired, I vividly remember someone writing, 'Why does New Mexico have to settle for someone from the C list?' If that doesn't plant a perception to fans and others, nothing does. I do know, having coached against Ritchie, that he's an exceptional basketball coach."
Very good article.

I don't think salary should be a deal breaker unless they are asking for something beyond the market price for a coach in the Big South. IMHO John Cooper, or anyone else with no head coaching experience for that matter, would be out of line to ask for more than $200,000, which would be almost as much as Marshall makes, and more than any other coach in our conference (to the best of my knowledge). That includes Eddie Biedenbaugh, who's been at Ashville forever.

McKay's contract at NM is for 3 more years, and I would be a little concerned about him wanting too much after that if he did well.

I think the $600,000 figure was the estimated total of the buyout over 3 years. I believe his salary at UNM was between 400 and 500 thousand.

Exactly my thoughts. If we were prepared to offer him any more than he is already earning at Auburn (which I am under the impression we were), than it is absolutely ridiculous that he wanted more (allegidly). Maybe there was some other term he didn't like for example: 4 vs 5 vs 6 years. But if it was the salary that was the hangup, I'm a little insulted.

People also need to look at the low cost of living in Lynchburg!! We should have a real estate agent at the negotiations to show the potential coach what is available for the money, haha!

On that level it's not about housing... it's about ego... and I'm okay with that. When a guy leaves a Major conference he wants to feel that it was a wise investment for his family and future... money is the best way to do that for many people.

It's just a BAD IDEA to offer SEC money to a coach when you play in the Big South. It's really irrelevant if we have the resources or not. We would look desperate and unprofessional. Any prospective coach who is serious will be doing the same due diligence any other job seeker does, and part of that is looking at the salaries in the league and the cost of living where the job is.

The situation at Winthrop is unique, and I don't thing most people in the league would think it was out of line for Marshall to make double his current $$ (which from what I hear is about what they are offering). His record is just so dominant, it can be justified.
