Well that's obvious...put the ball in the basket is what we're trying to do on offense.

How we do that...well, I'm not sure what Layer's plan is. The game today is about driving and creating opportunities, and from what little I've seen, we're not doing that.

I just checked the BSC stats:

LU is last in scoring offense.
Last in scoring margin
Next to last in FG%
Last in 3 point FG%
Most turn-overs in league
Fewest 3 point FGs in league

I think it's safe to say, we are the league's worst offensive team.

Fixed that one for you.

Most often teams on offense try to put the ball through the basket. In fact, for a lot of teams it's the only way they can score

As for the offensive patterns used to achieve this desired result it varies from team to team. Our team, and I don't care enough to watch enough to get the precise pattern, runs what appears to be a hybrid of The Wheel and UCLA offenses. We like to start guys high and run screens from there. Both are pretty 'old school' but both can be effective if execution is there

We run too much of a set-half court offense.(shot clock draining offense) Now granted, without playmakers, that's probably what we have to run. Need to recruit players who can get down the floor and better 3 point shooters. Play a more up-tempo game.

LU wants to get out in transition. The problem is that your big men are turnover machines trying to get the break started off defensive rebounds.

No, because he hasn't recruited the shooters to look good on offense. To look good, you must shoot ball thru basket.

Chris I just don't see them wanting to get out in transition. Of course it's difficult to tell when we can't rebound. If we wanted to get transition baskets there are a host of things LU could do, assuming they get the rebound, that take the Big Men's turnover issues off the table.

I'm just going by what the players tell me as far as the offense goes. Theo especially says the offense is at its best when the defense can jumpstart it by getting in transition. So that gives me the impression that there's some want. If there's no shot opportunity in the first 10 seconds of the shot clock, they tend to drag it out until the final 10 seconds, and they don't have the experience at point to run efficiently that way. They panic and take bad shots. You're absolutely right on the rebounding, especially from the center spot. Too many times, I've seen one guy from the opposition outwork four LU guys for a rebound. Poor positioning? Lack of desire? Hard to tell.

Them in the open court is a beautiful thing! His observation is correct but I have seen absolutely nothing that signifies the coaching staff is looking to make it a priority. To use a Football comparison it's like we run a Pro Style offense when we would be better running a spread offense.
Again, unless we rebound and/or create turnovers it's a moot point

Every coach in college basketball talks/wants to 'play fast' - 'run in transition' - 'we are going to push the ball this year' - blah blah blah!!

it's called stupid media speak or fan talk....

first of all, most coaches don't know how to teach proper transition offense, there is a lack of offensve knowledge in college basketball.
IMO top offensive coaches - 1. Roy 2. Bob McKillop 3. Hoiberg

and secondly most coaches don't want to give up the control of letting kids make plays.

BigSouthKing: I like your "giving up control" comment. Many coaches try to call plays from the bench as if they were football offensive coordinators. I wonder how much the players actually hear when the coach is calling all the plays from bench.

Players win games, coaches lose them. Coaches need to get out of players' way.

Sometimes I think basketball would be better if coaches were required to stay seated on the bench.
