A couple of things worth noting, and why I think this could be a big step forward:
As others have said, VMI flat embarrassed Liberty the first time in Lexington. Larry and Damien were the only ones who showed up that night and the Keydets ran them off the floor. Making a turnaround like Liberty did against that team in a short period of time was a good indicator that the team is coming around.
Also, in the first game, VMI trapped the ballhandler in the frontcourt a lot and it led to a lot of turnovers because the forwards were a bit stunned to get trapped. This time, the Keydets trapped up high and Liberty handled it better, but there were still a few silly turnovers with guys trying to force it into the block. What surprised me was that VMI had run a 2-3 zone for most of the game, but the second they went to man, Risher hit the 3 from the corner. Usually, you have to shoot your way out of a zone, not out of a man defense. Why VMI switched, I don't know. Liberty wasn't exactly lighting it up against the zone.
Dunton's got some onions for the Risher last-second shot call. But let's think about this for a minute and how beneficial it could be to the team. Not only does Risher get confidence, but opposing coaches are going to have to think twice about triple-teaming Blair when the game is on the line, because someone else has shown they can hit a winner. The more I think about it, the Risher choice makes sense. Damien was really off last night, leaving layups and gimme jumpers short. Smith was as mercurial as ever, going hard one minute and soft another. Stewart was ice cold. So Risher was the smart choice. For those who don't think the man can coach, I'd suggest you'd look at that last play again.
