Former Liberty High School standout Daryl Robertson is no longer with the Virginia Tech football team.
The 6-foot-5, 285-pound defensive lineman said Friday that it was his decision to leave the team, and he added that he hopes to re-join the Hokies at some point.
He said he is still in school at Virginia Tech and plans on continuing his education there.
"I don't know. It's been a while," Robertson said when asked when he last practiced with the Hokies.
He declined to give a reason for his departure.
Tech coach Frank Beamer could not be reached for comment Friday.
"Daryl is not with the team at this time," Beamer said on his Web site. "I plan on meeting with Daryl and his family at the end of the semester, and we'll discuss his future. That's all I'm going to say about that."
Robertson joined Tech's team this year after a stellar two-sport career at Liberty, where he also played basketball. Hokies coaches decided to redshirt him this season, and they were excited about his potential.
"Daryl Robertson from up in Bedford is going to be a good player," defensive line coach Charley Wiles said in August.
Robertson was a first-team all-News & Advance selection his senior season at Liberty. He started on both sides of the ball, garnering all-Seminole District and all-Region III honors at offensive guard and defensive line.
He was first-team all-Group AA selection as an offensive lineman.
